153. "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

Should students bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study? In my opinion, not all the things that students study are always correct. In some cases, they should question what they are taught.

First of all, some facts and knowledge are limited to the particular time and they are not always correct. So is the knowledge in the textbooks. For example, in the past people believed that the earth is the center of the universal and the sun rotates around the earth. In this case, the students, at the moment, are also given such ideas. Because the science is limited at that moment, it is acceptable that people did not know the earth is not the center of the universal. If the students brought a certain skepticism to the idea and tried to prove whether the idea was correct, the world might discover the truth earlier than Copernicus. Moreover, everybody may do something wrong and come to an incorrect conclusion. The authority may also make mistakes. And what the students learn are the results of some authorities' researches and theories. It is possible that some accidental chances contributed to their conclusion and their ideas may be correct in some particular circumstance, what is not general true in all situations. In this case, if the students do not bring a certain skepticism and follow what the authorities said, they may do something wrong in the future. Therefore, in that not all knowledge is always true and everybody may make mistakes, so is the authority, the students should bring a certain skepticism to what they learn without accepting it passively.

Furthermore, with bringing a certain skepticism, the students may gain the ability of critical thinking, which may help them understand what they learn. Anyone questions what he is taught should be on the basis of understanding what he is taught. It is not correct that he questions what he is taught without any evidence. So if the students question what they learn, they should fully understand the knowledge and try to prove whether they are correct or not. By doing so, they may not only gain the ability of critical thinking and learn the ability to solve problems themselves. Moreover, with the ability of critical thinking, they consider the source of the knowledge and other alternatives. In this case, they may not go to extremes. In other words, they will not do something without any sufficient evidence. On the contrary, they will be open-minded and consider the world with a broader view, which may help them get rid of lies, discrimination and prejudice. Thus, with questioning what they are taught, the students may attain the ability of critical thinking, which may benefit them throughout their life.

Admittedly, skepticism is a case to case issue. It is not correct for all students to question whatever they study. Some knowledge is beyond the students' understanding and they should accept it first and then try to understand it. For example, students, in the junior schools, are not suitable to question what they are taught, for they are too young to have and control the ability of critical thinking. If they are used to be critical, they may bring a certain skepticism to anything they meet. By doing so, it is likely that they will not accept what they learn in school. In addition, some knowledge is so confused that students can not question it within their understanding. In this case, they should accept it first and then try to understand it. Hence, it is not suitable for all students to question whatever they are taught. In some cases, they should accept it passively.

To sum up, due to the limitation of some knowledge and possibility of mistakes by authorities, students should bring a certain skepticism to what they are taught. By doing so, the students may acquire the ability of critical thinking, which may be beneficial for them life long. However, not all students are suitable to question whatever they are taught. In some cases, they should accept it passively.
