“It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician.”

There is much debate over whether complete honesty is a useful virtue for a politician. Some people maintain that it is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time, while others hold the opposite opinion. As far as I am concerned, I believe that honesty is still a virtue for a politician although it might not always be useful.

To begin with, a common notion is that politics is a struggle for power, in the process of which everyone tries to cheat and outwit others. Take a joke for example. On a dead politician’s tombstone there sculptured these words: Here lies a politician and an honest man. Everybody passed by thought it strange and imagined that two persons lay there. The joke indicates the impression of politicians in public minds, that is, they are dishonest. A politician who intends to win in the national election for president claims what he will do for public, such as that he will do a lot to improve their living standard, to give every child equal right to be educated, to reduce income tax, to better public transportation, etc, however, even if he gets what he wants, the position of president, what public really receive remains a long time to see, sometimes public get nothing from his government. A political leader needs to conceive others in order to gain his own goal. He could use any kind of means as he wish, we may say, to attain the profit. In a word, honesty cannot be helpful in that case.

In addition, what public people concern is their living situation, and to make people live and work in peace and contentment is political leader’s chief responsibility undoubtedly. People’s judgements over the point whether a political leader works effectively or not are based on the politician’s achievements which ensure people’s wealth, health, happiness, and so on. Public people are in favor of the profit that directly refer to their daily life instead of politician’s words and behavior. They do not care if they are telling truth or not. For instance, former American president Bill Clinton was involved in a sex scandal not long before he was elected the president. He was suffering from it even though he admitted that he had told lies in this circumstance. But a later poll has shown that Bill Clinton was regarded the third respective president during American history. Why people choose a liar? “Putting People First”, a national economic strategy for America written by Clinton, can tell you the answer. That is putting people first! From this example, we can conclude that telling lies does not mean an ineffective political leadership.

Furthermore, when it comes to the affair that makes the whole country at stake, political leader has the obligation to conceal national secret for the benefit of nation interest. If he reveals where the army quarter at, nation security will be in danger; if he discloses business secrets, nation economy may be impacted. On the contrary, political leader should make best use of everything to vindicate people and nation’s behalf. People will forgive the lie-telling leader if the leader telling lies just for profit of them. Accordingly, complete honesty is a potential cause of a politician’s low working efficiency rather than the precondition of his effective work.

From what we have discussed above, we can conclude that always telling the truth is not a virtue of an effective political leader. Only if can he benefit the nation and the people, perhaps whether he tells lies does not matter. Sometimes making proper reservation is the artifice used by shrewd political leaders. Finally, let us use the words of Bill Clinton to sum up: Putting People First.
