The intellectual benifits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pusuing a university or college degree.

There is more and more debate over whether college educating is valuable for a person’s development. Some people maintain that people who have attended university or college have more knowledge than those who haven’t. While others argue that reading on one’s own for four years is more effective to prompt oneself. As far as I am concerned, college educating is very important and necessary in one’s life.
In the first place, college education can bring bright instructors and necessary facilities to help people to acquire knowledge, while it is impossible or hard for those who have not attended college to get that convenience. When we are study new knowledge that may be very difficult for us to understand, we will be puzzled and helpless. In this respect, a good instructor is utterly necessary and helpful for us to give correct answer and lead us into a higher level, which will push our studying forward efficiently. Consider, when we are study such an event in history, how amazing it is for us to be showed the pictures and videos about that, because vivid videos and beautiful pictures can make us touch that event and feel the people in it. Meanwhile, they absolutely help us understand that historical event.
In the second place, college can offer a nice competing environment for people to stimulate students to study, to encourage them to discuss, to help each other understand a question deeply, which can develop a person fast and great. Reading alone is very boring, so it is very nice to have a partner to share his feeling about his reading material, to discuss any problem he met during his reading and to be encouraged to never give up when confronting difficulties.
Admittedly, compared with working in society, people in college are lack of practice. Colleges have more focus on basic knowledge, while society concentrates on solving problems that people confront in their daily life. Furthermore, it is impossible for colleges to offer the same environment as society does. The point is that we gain our knowledge not only from reading, but also from practice. If people in college just read books without any practice, college is probably to become the factory which produces and only produces bookworms those useless for society and human been.
To conclude, it is necessary and valuable for people to accept higher education from colleges and universities, because it is such an efficient way that pushes one’s development forward significantly. Great teachers, top facilities, friendly partners and classmates and so on, which are hard to gain when reading on one’s own contribute to the efficiency and depth of one’s study. Yet, any one, if he aims at reading intelligently, should consider his practice in his pursuit of knowledge.
