The arts, such as painting, music, literature and so on, usually can represent the world in a totally different by means of their special representing skills, and sometimes when enjoying these works people may find some ideas of a society which they have never known before. So there is a saying that the arts can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, and in my view, I have the same attitude to this saying.

Arts represent this world by means of their own particular skills. For example painting mainly depends on the different varieties and distinguished combination of colors; Music mainly depends on the varieties of high or low tones; and literature mainly depends on vivid and beautiful language. All of these methods give artists ability to manifest usual social phenomenon and their own feelings in an unusual way, with which they can attract people to notice their works and provide them an imaginative space. However this is just the basis of arts’ ability to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

In our society there are many things that can not be directly represented because of political reasons or something else, but arts with their special representing abilities can describe these phenomenons in a way which seems totally having no relationship with realism. For example every fairy story, which contains no real human beings in the real world, actually tells the stories of real person’s life, such as Divine Comedy, and furthermore, exaggeratedly, nearly each character in the fairy story may stand for a person in the real world and every story can be attributed to an event of realism. Clearly the author successfully told general people what the real world was and if his added some comments on each story, he also successfully told the public what his own opinion was. Paintings and arts have the same effects as literature. However we should notice that the events and attitudes the author wanted to reveal were all those that the ruler wanted to keep up, and without these forms of representation people may lose opportunity to know them. In other words, these hidden ones may constantly be hidden.

On the other hand, although there is no secret of a society to public, most of us still lack the ability to explore some key ideas or impulses of a society. However artists are usually more sensitive than us and they can see what we ignore in daily life. They use their brush, instrument, and pencil to create some works to explain the observation they have found to the society. These works may attract people’s attention more easily than only told them what had happened, and furthermore these works may leave some imaginative space for people to think and talk with each other, which can accelerate the understanding of the ideas and impulses of a society hidden behind of us.  However, unfortunately, there is a dilemma in front of us. The forms of representation used by artists can not totally be accepted and understood by all the public, especially some abstract ones.

But at all events arts are very useful for us to learning hidden facts of a society. Artists’ ability to manifest facts in a totally different way and their sensitive observation of a society help us real and reserve many hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Though it is hard for everyone to know the meaning of art works, definitely some body knows and that is enough for the whole public.
