我的第一篇,憋了很久了,请大家批狠点,拍者必回
Issue 31:Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when results of that research are controversial
I fundamentally agree with the speaker on the assertion that money spent on research is generally well invested. Admittedly, many researches may be controversial and the results of them may bring to people some harm. Yet, in my view, they are of greater benefit in a short or long term.
To begin with, one of major aims of research is to help us explore the unknown for ourselves and the world around us. And that, it is primarily through research that we can get the true answers to our questions and the solutions to our problems. As one of CAS(Chinese Academy of Science) academicians in my university once said(and I paraphrase):"research is the only impulse of our society advancement." It is hardly imagine that what our so-called "civilization" would be without contributions of such "researchers": It is Darwin who investigated a great number of creature to accomplish The Origin of Species and set theory of evolutionary selection so that people just can realize how they evolve and become what they are presently. Copemicus's heliocentric theory and Galileo's research in astronomy led us to the realm in which there are so many celestial bodies in the universe that our planet, the earth, is even the negligible one of legions of them. the invention of electric light bulb that based on thousands of research and experiment by Edison carried out an epoch-making achievement, making us vault from darkness to light. Under these examples, it is obvious that we benefit a lot through research.
With the rapid development of the science and technology, research is also chief means by which competitors could defeat their opponents who pay little attention to research. Here these two examples that aptly illustrate this point involve the field of sports. As nearly everyone known, Korea Archery Team can always outstrips others and get 3 gold medals and 1 silver one at Athens Olympic Games, which depends on their research on fabrication of bow and arrow on top. In soccer field, AC Milan club builds his physical research center, namely, Milan Laboratory for helping his players recover as soon as possible. on the contrary, his derby rival, Inter Milan club invests enormous funds on trading for talent players rather than researching on training and medical treatment. As a result, increasing injuries cumbered the latter in domestic and European matches and the front can win a series of championships with many elder players - since players can instantly get back to the field.
There is no denying that research on the sealed fields maybe bring on some controversial results. Historically, physics researchers focused on the power of atom, who had devotion to provide us with an alternative source of energy, may not think that it would become an abominable devil who willfully massacred human beings. Also, research on cloning technology will result in moral and ethical crisis even new "World War". But do not forget that all these existed or potential negative effect made by research could be controlled by some factors such as human nature well-oriented, efficient policy and nation-nation mutual restricted, and so forth. If so, people will stand to gain to the fullest extent.
To sum up, research is a power well of the innovation and progress of science and technology in our era. I agree that money spent on research is a sound investment on the whole. Yet we must consider how to optimize on distribution to finite resource in order to make the greatest profit. |
