argument4 各位斑斑~~兔兔完了该我啦~
4.The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.
"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty and Fitch Realty—Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams."
In this argument, the arguer concludes that Adams Realty, of the two leading real estate firms in the town is superior to the other one, Fitch Realty. Furthermore, the speaker suggests us choosing Adams to sell home instead of Fitch Realty. Detailed comparison and contrast were illustrated above clearly; however, the process commits several fallacies.
First of all, the argument is based on a false analogy. The arguer simply lists the number concerned about the peripheral situation of these two firms, such as the number of estate agents, revenue and the average price of home sales last year; but he/she does not provide any evidence that these data are the component to determine the capability for them to sell house successfully. The factors which are more important to standard the strength of the firms are overlooked. It is possible that the Fitch corporate with less agents but high efficiency; also, the orientation of marketing of Fitch is focused upon the smaller, less modern houses in suburban areas compared with Adams.
Secondly, the arguer commits a fallacy of unfair generalization. Even if it spent only one month for him/her to sell home through Adams last year, while it cost more than four months to sell another one through Fitch ten year ago, there is no implication that the efficiency of Fitch is worse than Adams. There lies so much time of elapse between these two purchases that many indeterminate factors may change: the prices of houses themselves, the environments of the homes and the policies and restriction the government towards house trading. Besides, the arguer doesn't provide any information about these two homes such as the areas, the location, and the extent of decoration inside. These all, are important elements that could determine the time selling the homes to great extent.
Last but no the least, even though Adams does perform better in most cases compared with Fitch, one cannot arbitrary draw the conclusion that all houses could be vented out quickly and at good price in Adams. As mentioned in the above paragraph, it is the home itself that determines whether it can be classified into the documentary of homes that would be vented satisfyingly. Moreover, Adams is absolutely not perfect, as everyone has to admit; thus there surely exist some kinds of homes that Adams cannot deal with successfully. At this moment, is it wiser to turn to other experienced firms which could solve this problem better, such as, the Fitch? Actually, there may lie more choices offered except these two options.
In conclusion, the arguer fails to establish a convincing conclusion that Adams is superior to Fitch in selling homes; and the suggestion of choosing Adam instead of Fitch lacks careful consideration. To be more persuasive, the arguer should offer more data and detail about these two firms as well as taking other smaller firms into the range of option to sell homes.
