Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served.

Old buildings, a valuable record of any society's past, are threatened by the need for modern buildings. Accompanied with the growth of population, the need for more places is increasing, so the modern planners are considering replace the old buildings. In my opinion, however, replacing the old buildings by the modern ones would be quite unadvisable and a loss to the owner of the historical old buildings.

At the first place, the old buildings are generally a great treasure to the culture of the society. They are indispensible in interpreting the people there. Pyrimiad, for instance, can reflect the worship of the ancient Egyptians to the "eternal world" and can greatly interprete the hardworking of these men. A comparison of the old buildings in different places can also illustrate the different views the peoples hold towards the world and the life. For example, quite different from the huge and triangle pyrimiad the ancient Egyptians built, the ancient Chinese preferred the tiny and spherical tomb. From these differnces, one can tell that the Chinese are  generally pursuiting a piece "life" after death and consider the shape of circle eternal. The same comparison of different culture can be also proceeded by similar comparisons of their old buildings. If, however, the old buildings are destroyed, that methods of comparison will be unaccessible.

Besides the culture, old buildings are also useful in interpreting the develoment of their owners. An efficient and precise way to know the development of a people is to examine the develoment of their buildings, whether from the buildings' structure or material, from their adornment or making skills. Gutten Missipattician, a famous professor in the history department in the University of Uvernial, is specialized in studying the development of a people in this way. The complexity of the structure of buildings in differnt periods can, as he says as an example, reflect the level of civilization that people are making that time, and the preferred material building houses can reflect the productivity in that time. "These serials of old buildings hide many aspect of the development of humans", he insists, "a closer and more careful insight into these buildings will certainly provide a more accurate answer on how we develop ". Considerring this importance of old buildings, a precedence over the modern buildings should be placed on the old ones.

Last but not least, many old buildings also have great economical potentials if utilized properly. Due to the trends of increase in tourism these days, the old buildings are becoming quite valuable. It is estimated that 62% of the profits made by tourist, which contributes to 12% of the GDP of India, is made from the Buddaism's buildings there. Conssissbia, an official of Indian Congress, says, "We are appreciated by the treasure (old buildings of the Buddaism) our precendants have left to us. This treasure now encourage the development of the economic in our contry and also increase our communication with other countries indirectly". If the modern planners are want more profits, then, why they destroy such a wonderful money making machine?

Old buildings have already been destroyed by the nature through thousands of years now, it is a loss we can do nothing with but crying. Then, why we make more losses ourselves?

The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthemore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the arguer give some facts about the sellings in the last year and give a result of a survey made by a magzining, then he gets to the conclusion that his factory should concentrate on domestic cheeses to improve their profits. This argument, however, is deficient and inconvincing in many aspects.

In the first place, the arguer fail to give enough facts to support the conclusion that domestic cheeses are popular or easy to sell than imported ones. He only refers that the five best-selling cheeses in the newest store are all domestic cheeses. Then, how about the sixth best-selling cheeses and the seventh, etc? It is highly possible that in the first twentith best-selling cheeses, only the first five are domestic while the other fifteen are all imported ones. And without the specific data about the selling amount, it is quite probable that the diffrences in selling amount of the first twentith best-selling cheeses are not large so that the whole selling amount of the imported cheeses are much larger than the amount of the domestic ones. Also, he just mentions the sellings in the newest store. As a president of a chain store, he should give the data of sellings in other stores in the nation to get a wise conclusion. Also, the survey of the Cheeses of the World magazine is not quite convincing in that it can only reflect the preference of the "subscribers", then, how about the people who do not respond to the survey? Quite possibly, most imported cheese likers are reluctant to respond the survey. In a word, more specific data about the sellings of the cheeses in the chain stores and more scientific survey are indispensible to illustrate the popularity of domestic cheeses.

At the second place, even the specific data can be given to support the popularity of the domestic cheeses, it can't illustrate that the profit of the domestic cheeses are larger. The popularity of the domestic cheeses can only promise a greater avenue. Avenue, however, is not the same concept of profit. It is quite possible that the profit rate of the imported is quite higher than the domestic ones so that it can promises a large amout of profit even at a much less selling amout. To illustrate the profitability of the domestic cheeses, the arguer should give more data support and more comparisons.

At last, the arguer fails to consider the bad effects in discontinue stocking the imported cheese. Maybe the imported cheese do have litte amount of selling and be less profitable, but there may be certain need for the imported cheese. If the imported cheeses disappeare, many customers who need them will leave this chain stores. And losses of these customers can cause even more losses. For the goodness of the chain store, the president should consider all the effects and then make the decision.

In sum, the arguer fails to give enough data to support his conclusion and is too hurry to get his decision. More data and more careful considerations are needed.
