Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct.
The speaker asserts that the governments should take actions to stop the languages which are used by fewer and fewer people from disappearing. Although I admit that we should pay attention to these languages, since they a part of our culture, it is unnecessary for us to save them at the expense of ignoring other problems.

At first glance, the speaker's assertion seems to be correct. After all, any languages belong to the human culture. Thus, if they were extinct, our culture would not be intact any longer. What's more, there are a lot of ancient books or other materials were written in these languages. With the extinction of the languages, at the same time, we would also lose the opportunity to understand the meaning of the reading materials given by our forefather. As a result, we might have no chance to know some part of the human history forever.

However, the speaker's claim is problematic in other two aspects. One of the problems is that do we really need to save these endangered languages. Consider the reason why they may be extinct. This is because they are not as practical or convenient as other languages. By the Darwin's Natural Selection theories, their extinction is their destiny, having nothing to do with us. Then we don't have the responsibility to rescue them. In addition, these languages are always spoken in some less developed countries. Thus, if the governments of these nations pay to much attention to this issue, or they give too much financial support to solve this problems, they will surely have no time and energy and money to cope with other problems, such as poverty, pollution, corruption, and violent crimes. All these problems may soon make the countries into trouble, if they are not attached enough importance.

The other reason why I cannot agree with the speaker's claim is that less languages may help people in different part of the world communicate more efficiently, then the society may develop even faster over the same time. For example, nowadays, any scientists who want to make a research must collect enough information, however the work of translating English or other languages into their mother languages will cost them a lot of time. The scientists are not the only victims of the various languages, the problems, related to the languages, prevents all of us from sending or receiving important information. Take some Chinese farmers as an instance. I have seen such a piece of news on the newspaper that, recently, some farmer have just loosed their business with a foreign customer, because after they published their products on the Internet, the farmer could not efficiently communicate with the foreigner wanting to buy them. If there were only a few languages being still available now, apparently, this problem would be soon solved.  

When it comes to the question what about those ancient reading materials, I think with the modern technology, the computer can soon help any person, even though hardly have any knowledge about the languages, to translate them into the languages that we use. So it seems we don't have to ask some certain person know how to speak in them in order to understand the ancient books.

In sum, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker's assertion, since these endangered languages are useless, and the actions with aim to prevent them from become extinct is unnecessary and meaningless, although I admit that they can help us to learn a few books written in them.
