Issue108 In many countries it is now possible to turn on the television and view government at work. Watching these proceedings can help people understand the issues that affect their lives. The more kinds of government proceedings—trials, debates, meetings, etc—that are televised, the more society will benefit.
With the development of democracy, more and more countries televise governments' proceedings, such as trials, meetings and debates. As the author mentioned, the more kinds of government proceedings are televised, the more society will be benefit. In my opinion, it is necessary and beneficial for the society and government to show some kinds of proceedings, but not the relationship between the more and the more. In other words, some secret and important proceedings can not be watched by the public.
First of all, I will interpret that some kinds of the proceedings can be showed by the government significantly for the development of society, which are close to be related with people's living conditions, such as meetings for rising in the water price as well as fuel oil price, and which deal with emergent situations damaging the citizens' lives, such as the flood and SARS. Like the author said, watching these proceedings can help people understand the issues that affect their lives. For example, people can be granted to watch the meeting about increasing the price of water, so people can recognize the real reasons directly rather than from the rumors. Meanwhile, such doing can make citizens well prepare on raising the water price, and then reduce the conflicts and complains on the government when the decisions are carried out to the public. For SARS, before people knowing the current situations published by the government, there were kinds of fears and unstable atmosphere from the people in the society. After Chinese government held the press release every day through the television to the public, people calmed down and begin to hold together to finally defeat the SARS. In fact, when the public understand the condition which they were in, and realized that the government, hospitals and doctors were still defending with SARS bravely, people were encouraged much more and realized that they were not alone. Therefore, I think that such above proceedings should be televised by the government more and more, because people need understand rather than being blind to follow their government. And thus people are willing to contribute themselves to develop country, as the member of country.
On the contrary, I insist on that some proceedings can not be showed, which are related with the security of the country, the financial policies and military systems. Those proceedings are secret for the government. If those details are published, for example, how many a country has the advanced missiles; what the location of the military base or sham battle is; what the methods of inventing the spaces shuttle are; how the government and central bank will do for the exchange rate of the currency? The proceedings discussing above questions and contents can not be showed to the public. If some secret details were known by enemies, it would be dangerous for the safety of a country and its citizens. Therefore, these proceedings are not fit for the author's opinion.
Furthermore, when we discuss above the televised contents and proceedings to the public, I think that the justice and fairness of the media can not be neglected. There is no doubt that some media are controlled by some official departments, so the contents published by such media are unreliable for the public. Therefore, as the righteous and healthy media, what media can televise and what can not televise must be considered carefully by them from the side of the whole society and major people.
In conclusion, what the author mentioned need be carefully concerned according to different functions and results of televised different proceedings in the society. |
