Argument 217
The following appeared in a brochure promoting the purchase of local franchises for a national chain of gyms.
'Now is the time to invest in a Power-Lift Gym franchise so that you can profit from opening one of our gyms in your town. Consider the current trends: Power-Lift Gyms are already popular among customers in 500 locations, and national surveys indicate increasing concern with weight loss and physical fitness. Furthermore, last year's sales of books and magazines on personal health totaled more than $50 million, and purchases of home exercise equipment almost doubled. Investing now in a Power-Lift Gym franchise will guarantee a quick profit.'

This argument concludes that it is the right time to invest in a Power-Lift Gym franchise for profit To support this conclusion the arguer points out the popularity of Power-Lift Gym among customers in 500 locations, the increasing concern with weight loss and physical fitness, and so on. However, the arguer relies on a number of doubtful assumptions and is therefore unconvincing.

First of all, though the Power-Lift Gyms are already popular among customers in 500 locations, there is no evidence of the popularity in every location. If investors set their money on purchase of local franchises for Power-Lift Gym in the location where no people know this gyms, they may receive less, if any, profits because few people may go there to exercise.

The national surveys also can not evidence anything. The argument never tells us how many people involved in this survey and what conditions of them. Maybe there only a litter number of citizens take part in the survey and the data collected from them can not represent all the public, or people involved in this survey all have some physical problems, such as fat, high blood pressure, and so on and they are more concerned about these aspects. However, if we admit that all the data of the survey are useful, it still does not mean people who concern with weigh loss and physical fitness will like to use Power-Lift Gym. They may choose other method to keep good condition, such as eating healthy, sleeping enough, giving oneself less pressure and so on.

Thirdly last year’s sales of books and magazines on personal health and purchases of home exercise equipment also mean nothing. We do not know whether $50 is a much higher profit among all kinds of books and magazines. Probably it is much less profit comparing to others books, such as novels. Though these books may have relation to personal health but there is no evidence to show they have relationship to Power-Lift Gym. The contents of those books and magazines may mainly be medical knowledge or something else. Furthermore purchases of home exercise equipment doubled may only mean increase in these equipment sailing, but no facts show the absolute number of these buyers are very large. Maybe people who buy equipment will exercise in their own home, which will cause decrease of appearance in the Gym.

In conclusion, if the arguer want to persuade people to invest, he or she needs to provide other evidence to show the popularity of the Power-Lift Gym, the number of people involved in the survey and their personal conditions, as well as the relative profits of the sales of books and magazines and absolute number of people who buy exercise equipment and so on.
