In this era of rapid technological advancement and social development, education has been put on more and more emphasis nowadays that it has become the foundation of continuous prosperity of a nation. Because of this, a public controversy arises on how to make education effective and efficient. Some believe that education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. I doubt this because in my point of view, education is really effective if we also put some emphasis on the basic knowledge facing all the student.

As we all know, everyone has his own talent and interests and education designed especially to meet individual needs and interests of each student would be of enormous beneficial to students in that it fits everyone well and undoubtedly is more efficient and effective than the teacher-centered education system in inspiring a student’s intrinsic interests to study and increasing individual ability. For example, the formerly education system is so called “teacher-centered” because the relationship between teachers and students is asymmetrical or unbalanced with the teacher being in a position of authority and students having no choice but to absorb the information provided by the teacher passively. But things would be different about the “student-centered” education system. In other words, it provides many opportunities for the student to be involved through learning and active in the class. And since this education system is designed especially to meet individual needs and interests, the student will be absorbed in the education activity and not feel dull or vapid.

In addition, this type of education system is effective only when every student have mastered what they have learned. Needless to say, the “student-centered” education system has various of advantages, but the standard with which to evaluate the effectiveness of the system is whether the student has mastered what they learned.

In the other hand, basic knowledge facing all the student is also indispensable through the process of education. For example, some kind of basic knowledge like the ability to handle relationship between people would undoubtedly beneficial the student both in their future work and study no matter whether they are interested in.

In conclusion, the “student-centered” education provides precious opportunities for the student to be involved through learning and some basic knowledge help students prepare themselves in future society. In a word, education will be truly effective only when we put some emphasis on the basic knowledge facing all the student as well as on the “student-centered” education system.
