What distinct human beings from other animals? Someone may argue it is the language, others claim that it is the intelligence. However, as far as I am concerned, the ideas and values in human society revealed by particular appearance and behavior is the answer. Thus, I am strongly agreed with the speaker's assertion that people's attitudes and interests is revealed by the way they look, dress, and act and we can understand a society's ideas and values by perceiving human beings' appearance and behavior. This claim, in my opinion, is not constructive but also instructive.

It is obvious that the looking and dressing method informs us of people's attitudes and values, in other words, the way how we look and dress is meaningful in sociology. For example, people who look around and down often appear shifty to Americans, although in fact they don’t stare continuously at the other person, but glance elsewhere every few seconds. Another instance is the Dynasty Tang in ancient China. People in the Tang Dynasty are relatively open-minded compared to other dynasty and this ideology is reflected on the clothes wear by women. In a word, outward appearance is an important signal of human's attitudes and values.

The act and behavior is another significant way to understand people's ideas, values and attitudes, even a society's culture characters. Think about it: a society characterized by over-consumption is clearly one that values comfort and convenience over a healthy environment. A society whose members behave in a respectful manner toward one another is one which values human dignity. While a society of people who act in a hateful manner toward others clearly places a low value on respect for others and on tolerance of different opinions and beliefs. The act and behavior of people in a particular society and culture is just like a mirror to reflect the values, ideas, rituals and lifestyles of its members. This is the second reason why I agree with the speaker's statement.

From the perspective of sociology, the reason why people's looking, acting, dressing method shows their altitudes and values is because human being is a social animal and it is the socialization during one’s whole life make him or her to be a member of society. Socialization is the process that people, especially young people learn acceptable and unacceptable behaviors and manners for a given environment. That is to say, human is human because he absorbs his own particular society's culture, so the way they act and appear is bound to reach the content of this culture and society's demand. The world around us presents a seamless web of physical and cultural forces, which interact in ways that can be understood from people’s interaction mode, while the way people look, act and dress is one of them.

From what has been discussed above, we can draw the conclusion that it is the way that people look, dress, act and behave that reveals human's attitudes and society's values. In the era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing culture and manner complexity, it is becoming more and more important way to judge one culture from others by first impression of its outer appearance.
