Argument179
The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.
'It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious—an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction.'
The conclusion conducted in the argument suggested that the supply of Good-Taste Company should not be hired next. The conclusion base on the assumption that expensive price and poor service of Good -Taste company and better delicious food in Discount company. To solidify the conclusion, the author even make a prediction of employee satisfaction will be improved by the change of cafeteria food supplier. However, the argument flaws in several aspects, with a careful examination.
To begin with, the price and quality of Good-Taste Company should be inspected further, certain other possible reasons exist. Although, during the last three years the price of Good-Taste Company has risen in each of the year, the trend of the price could not be predicted. It is quite possible that the price will not raise any more or even decrease dramatically next year. Under this circumstance, hiring the Good-Taste company will be a clever action to save the cost.
The Discount services may not be so well condition, as the author expected. As a family-owned local company the food quality and hygiene of Discount is suspect. With less regulation, the process of food production in the Discount may have potential problems, such as lack of sufficient disinfections for food, less freshness of food. All of these factors may have a negative effect on employees’ health in Cedar Corporation. What's more, the sample offered to the author of this argument may just a coincidence, for the food is suitable for the author. But, the author could not represent the appetite of the entire employee in the company. If the appetite of employee is contradict to the author's, and the suggestion were taken, then the result can be a great tragedy for the company.
The assumption that employee satisfaction will be improved is groundless. The argument has focused our attention on the price and quality of food supplier. However, there is no causal link between satisfaction and the choice of food supplier, without direct proof. Some other factors, such as salary, promotion, and office environment are more important than food to determine the satisfaction.
As the reasoning stated above, the conclusion of this argument is not cogent, without enough evidence provided. Further survey should be conducted, such as a direct pool in the employee of the company, to rule out the abovementioned possibilities |
