"Most people choose a career on the basis of such pragmatic considerations as the needs of the economy, the relative ease of finding a job, and the salary they can expect to make. Hardly anyone is free to choose a career based on his or her natural talents or interest in a particular kind of work."
The statement above is true for at least two reasons: one is from the perspective of the society; another is according to individual needs.
The society requires most people to choose a career based on the needs of economy. The economy is one of the most significant institutions of a society. More specifically, the progress of a society largely depends on the economy. People are indispensable and the most active role in economic activities: engineers design; workers produce; salesmen promote. If most people did not participate in such activities, obviously, the economy would be at stake and hence the society would lose the most important foundation and then collapse. Thus, in order to not only survive but also thrive, the society often persuades people to devote themselves into the economy with all its power. Through education the society imbues young students with knowledge and skills that are necessary preparations for jobs; through mass media the society advocates the benefits from careers that are for the needs of economy; even through various social institutions like social security the society forces people to work for social needs. Under such circumstance, people have to take the needs of economy into accounts unless they do not want to survive in the society. In contrast, a society rarely encourages its people to choose a career only based on their talents or interests, because once their talents and interests are not in accordance with the needs of economy they are useless for the society. For instance, in China, a lot of scientists, who were interested in theory rather than practice, changed their focus into practical needs of Chinese economy. In short, most people have consider the needs of economy on people when they choose a career..
In order to enjoy a better life, an individual often has no choice but to take such pragmatic considerations as the salary and the ease of finding a job into account. People benefit a lot merely from high salary. Good housing, nice cars, and attractive entertainments require money. Even only with money boys are able to marry beautiful girls. Children can also enjoy high quality education, if their parents are rich. When facing the above attractions, hardly one can resist against them. In addition, people prefer the ease of finding a career rather than the difficulty in pursing an idealist job. Psychologists point out that most people will suffer mental pains when they are striving for a job and that such pains to some extent are detrimental to people's psychology. Hence, people tend to embrace the ease of finding a job. On the contrary, if people choose a career according to their talents and interests, it is entirely possible that they would not obtain much money and enjoy the ease of getting a job. For example, some artists, who are crazy about their interests and have great talents, often lead a poor life, such as poverty and unemployment. In a word, for personal life, people must consider practical things.
In sum, for the above two reasons, most people inevitably consider pragmatic matters before they finally decide their jobs and they tend to refrain their talents and interests. However, since people's talents and interests can play a positive role in their careers, the society should pay much attention to foster people’s talents and interests. |
