185. "Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
I agree with the speaker’s assertion that scandals can, if not always, play a conductive role in the improvement of the whole society; and I also agree with the speaker in that scandals are more likely to catch public attentions by any speaker or reformer instead, although I maintain that this very catching is not necessary helpful, and more often than not is disastrous to the solving of the problems themselves.
Nowadays, Scandals are nearly everywhere. In the political field, perhaps nothing is more notorious than Nixon’s Watergate scandal, which leads to him the first America president to quit government during his presidency. It is hard to imagine, for every individuals in society, that lacking exposure to such a scandal would means to us. Maybe Nixon would win using the underhanded maneuvers against his competitors, and if he could such things that seriously harm the justice and fairness which we embrace so dear in the election phase, how could we count for him to improve and boost our living condition, and thus bring about well-being for common people? So in this sense, scandals are very helpful in releasing the very problems we may not know beforehand, thus can prevent a more severe errors that cannot be recanted later. So is the case in the academic field. I once heard that one professor, in order to gain more prominence in his physical field, are taking the very risk to pirate his peer colleague’s papers; and other kinds of academic scandals concerning about borrow other author’s ideas without informing and fully exploit his/her fellow student’s work to make himself/herself famous. All of these scandals can do a serious negative effect disturbing the fair and meticulous atmosphere that academic research process needs in order to make a great achievement and beneficial to the well-being of human kind.
Scandals, owning its usability for their justice and fairness bring about to the whole society as analysis before, has an additional value for their quickly spreading effects, and often, if not always are more quickly than any other speakers or reformers. Speakers or reformers catch public’s attention by their own fame and style in persuading people, but this fame has its limitation because it is only effective in his/her own audience circle, beyond that circle or group, he/she will lose his impression upon people. What’s more, it is completely reasonable to believe that people are growing the sense of boring or weariness if they are listening that speaker or reformer’s opinion or assertions day by day, year by year; sooner or later, they will lose their freshness toward him/her. Scandals, on the other hand, are like throwing a stone on the peaceful lake, it catch the human attention by its nature to meet the curiosity about the darker side of leaders, and this naked truth exposed by the scandals make them more convincing than other sermons speaker or reformers comments and thus serve as a living educational materials which people more willing to accept and agree upon.
But I like to point out that acceptance and agreement doesn’t lead to solution of the problems that scandals bring about, actually, it is often exploited by the mass medias whose role is just exaggerate such scandals and regard them as a stimulating point for the sale-promotion or profits of their own medias. For example, when Clinton have a love affair with lewinsky, many newspapers and TV programs are bombarding the love affair he made, and try to gather all such photos and videos and let them played as quickly as possible without the respect of how adolescent’s feelings. And such kind of deterior behavior would do severe harm to the healthy development of young men, which weight more than stupidly repeat that scandal itself.
In sum, I stress on the significance of scandals if it can positively preserve the fair atmosphere functioning of no matter political or academic fields; at the same token, I think to emphasizing one scandals purely for the sake of entertainment and joking materials, would have bring more problems which we may not notice. |
