Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

I agree with what the speaker stated above in many cases. It is true that scandals can serve to reveal problems in many fields that a community or a society should address. However, scandals can sometimes distract us from more important issues.

On the one hand, scandals can serve to call our attention to the existed problems in many fields, such as in politics, academia, or other areas that we otherwise neglect. The pragmatic modern example in the political realm is the Watergate scandal. No public speaker or reformer can have called the nation's attention to the problem of presidential misconduct until the scandal had been found. In the economic field, a good example is the financial scandal of the AA, which was one of the world" BIG FIVE" accounting firm companies. Without this scandal, we won't notice the problem that had already existed long time ago. Even in the field of football, for example, so called "black whistle" in China, the scandal of football corruption, is not much account of before.

Further more, by calling us notice these problems, we can know how and why they existed, thus take some efficient measures to deal with these problems, to make the society function better. Anron scandal which is well-known in the US. Anron concealed a great amount of financial deficit from the public and continuously asked the government and some other companies to provide more fund for its further thriving. Because of the ill-management, Anron confronted a precarious situation and eventually went to bankruptcy. After the scandal was announced in the public, the legislators made an introspection and soon came with many effective laws concerning regulating the management of a company.

On other hand, however, scandals have an inconspicuous trait that will deny the achievement of those people and institutions in these scandals. The scandal between the US former president Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, for example, which called so much attention and interests of the whole American, will most likely overshadow the entire eight years of his tenure, which actually should not be effaced.

Therefore, people should control the "degree" and keep calm and fair when they pay attention to these scandals. People do not need to pay much attention to the superficial phenomena, or get so surprised that will talk about them here and there, while do not focus on the certain issue that do need their enough concentration.

To sum up, just like everything may be like a double-edged sword, so are scandals.  Even scandals can be useful in many areas and they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could, we should cautiously and composedly confront with them, and control the "degree" properly so that we can make them better promote the development of the society.
