Can reading books be replaced by watching television in the process of learning, as the speaker says? In my observation, while correctly pointing out the changes televisions has brought about, this statement actually has overstated the role television takes and underestimated the lasting value provided by reading.
Admittedly, the emergence of television largely changed our ways of learning and getting information. Unlike the provincial situation most people face before the debut of TV, now it is so easy that we acquire information almost everywhere at any time, thanks to the explosive effect of TV. If we want the knowledge of the nature, there is National Geographic serving; or if we want to knowledge the most updated science breakthroughs, want用的过多可以用like, would like to, prefe we can appeal to the Discovery. Also along去掉好嘛 with the covering of television, we are given the chance to know about different countries, different cultures and different civilizations, even those before our time. 【A】An archeology student can be taken to witness the pyramids and to view the process of mummification of a pharaoh, without spending a penny but just sitting in the room watching the screen. And a child could quickly understand what a dunk or a touchdown is simply with a clip of video. ToIn this sense, we are greatly benefited from the television media.
However, this does not necessarily lead to dispensing误用the neglect of reading books; both concerning the merits book possess and the weakness TV carries. Of course, the television media provide us vivid images which serves to best illustrate the abstruse conceptions, yet it also sometimes abstract us from real learning. For example, the table of programs on television is decided not by personal need but from the television station, which just care about the receiving rate and hence focus more on the superficial events or anecdotes rather than the truths underlying. More often the knowledge we acquire from television give us too straight a image that we grant that as what it should be, though the reality may contain more possibilities and diversities, and from this view, our mind and imagination is narrowly restricted by television teaching. Thus, television is not prominent enough.和论点不对用,你的论点是不用减少电视的作用,那应从这方面说,而不是说电视的缺点,要不你改改论点吧
Therein lies the very value of books. Compared to television, books in hand make us 【outside】out of the din of mundane life and completely immerse our soul into the wisdom in books, communicating with Aristotle or Plato freely, even though they passed away thousands of years ago. Moreover, reading is a relatively personal experience, which is not affected by the outside and other people. It is by freely individual reasoning and critical thinking that we complete our learning and enrich the mental world. Here we can see how indispensable reading is.
Finally, having acknowledged the complexity of this issue, we still cannot view it as a dilemma. Modern science has provided so many ways available to taken in study, such as Internet and other high-tech technology. In many states all over US, schools have realized how Internet can facilitate learning and teaching and adopted Web-oriented courses to fulfill the target of education. In addition, conceptions about books and television are changing and bring about new methods of usage, which can eliminate the shortcomings and amplify merits of each. Simply put, flaws should not be the excuse of rejecting new generations of study and neglecting the new trends is by all means irresponsible to human race.
这一段升华作的很好,突出书和其他的对比
In conclusion, though television is taking a more and more important and notable role in learning, traditional reading will not give way to the leading place. What is more, we should stick to improve the usage of both as well as other accessible technologies. Therefore, we can safely draw a conclusion that, only by achieving a balance between modern and traditional methods can we push the human knowledge and understandings to a brighter level.
