Issue110
“When we concern ourselves with the study of history, we become storyteller. Because we can never know the past directly but must construct it by interpreting evidence, exploring history is more of a creative enterprise than it is an objective pursuit. All historians are storytellers.”
What do historians show to us, story or fact? Some may argue that, like the statement above, they are storyteller since they demonstrate history through the way they interpret historical evidence rather than experience the past directly, and because of this, exploring history is a creative activity. However, careful reflection shows us that the opposite is just the case.[最好明确提出你的观点,再说你是大反对,小支持,应该有让步吧]
When it comes for us to find history, we must or have to reach this goal through finding historical evidences[relic] and interpreting them later[加一句才能是逻辑顺畅,充当主题句的作用。rather than fabricating without depending on any facts]. Admittedly, we can never know the past directly. But acknowledging this dose [does] not necessarily mean that we cannot have a [an] objective view of our history. Take the formation of the Earth as an example. How dose it become the beautiful home to the human being today from the extremely hot cosmic substances? Tens of thousands evidence about biological fossils, geological and geographical characteristics of the land and ocean teach us that it is the result of volcanic and geological movements, together with changes in the climate and evolution of creatures. Without these historical evidences, there’s no way for us to find the path through which we come to present. As it says in the statement above, we learn history on the basis of historical evidences. But it cannot be the reason that we are storytellers. On the contrary, this is the very reason that we cannot be storytellers.
Moreover, exploring history is more of an objective pursuit, rather than a creative enterprise. Being objective is the first and most important position we must hold in the way we probe history. The very reason [同位语从句不可省that] the past is termed [defined]as history is that it actually happened, objectively, which cannot be denied or changed by human mind. [For example, that the human beings evolved from monkeys, an event which went forward along the steps of history, which none will deny. We cannot expect someone jump out to say the fact is that we evolved from other creatures, frogs perhaps, for we know what the history shows us is the very correct one][偶觉的这个例子不好,这是历史么? Based on this understanding, we must stand firmly to be objective in exploring the history because only through this we can find the very truth of the history. [The phenomena that someone tries to distort the history, for example, scrabble irrelevant pieces of fossil into a new one as an evidence of history event, should be regarded as an offensive to the very spirit to be objective.
In addition, those historians are not storytellers.[你的第一段不是论证了么?On the contrary, this is the very reason that we cannot be storytellers.
] What they are pursuing is [to]try their best to represent the history in front of people, starting out from the point to be objective and using technological methods and equipments. It is an essential requirement for anyone to be a historian. If anyone says that it is Japan the victim in the World War Ⅱ, we can only expect him to be a cheater who is trying to distort the fact it is Japan who provoked such a serious humanity crisis, but not a historian[涉及敏感问题,最好不要举,日本民众也是victim可以举德国Hitler or Iraq Saddam]. Finding the objective truth is the ultimate goal of those historians, which just cannot let them to be storytellers.
Admittedly, due to various backgrounds and subject[是动词]to the ability and level to cognize the history, there can be some occasions when our findings are far away from the right path, even the opposite.
In sum, when we concern with the study of history, what we are trying is to show the truth of history to people objectively, rather than telling stories. Though some faults have occurred, which give the illusion that the historians are all storytellers, actually they are not. Exploring history is an objective pursuit, but not a creative enterprise, since being objective is the very footstone of historian research, as well for the historians.
