Issue241 An individual's greatness cannot be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries; the most objective evaluators of a person's greatness are people who belong to a later time.

Nowadays, facing with the problem that whether an individual’s greatness can be judged objectively by his contemporaries or not, different people hold various opinions. While some think that only their offspring can give them an objective evaluation, others hold that those living in their ages can judge them objectively. As both sides seems having plausible reasons, before rendering my viewpoint, it is worthwhile to have a look at their views.


First of all, common sense makes most people hold the former opinion. In the following, I will analyze their reasons to choose this view. The first cause lies in that history witnessed many great people who are not treated by their contemporaries justly but received good reputation after their death. A good case in point is Columbus a great scientist who put forward the view that it is the sun rather than the earth that is the center of the comas. As we know, people in his era did not know the basic scientific knowledge and for a long time they ensured that all the stars including the sun evolve around the earth. Under that circumstance, Columbus was thought saying nonsense and was punished seriously. Only when several ages passed, did people gradually believe what he said is true. And now he is listed among the most influential scientists in human history. It is no doubt such example is not rare, which causes many people naturally think that the most objective evaluators of a person’s greatness are people who belong to a later time.

That reason just mentioned is only part of the whole one, another side is people living in the same time cannot contact with others without emotion, they may like them or dislike them, which more or less influence their evaluation on such people. Simply put, if they agree with one person’s viewpoint, they usually give a more positive evaluation. On the contrary, if someone’s views conflict with theirs, even if theirs are false, in most cases they will give such people a negative evaluation. Considering this point, they also hold that contemporaries cannot give a person’s greatness an objective judgment.

Furthermore, as a famous ancient Chinese poet put in one of his poem ( I paragraph)：“ one cannot observe the true outline of Lushan, because he himself is in the mountain.” This means that one cannot recognize something sufficiently if he involve into this thing, only when he observes it in an outsider’s view, he can completely know it. In other words, to some extent it explained the former opinion.

However, since everything is not absolute, there are indeed some people whose greatness is evaluated by his coevals who justified the latter opinion. For example, Edison once invented almost more than one thousand things which largely convenient people’s life and he was revered by his contemporaries and received objective judge. What’s more, people holding the latter opinions think that because there are so many rewards in our world nowadays and people who received such rewards are surely great in his field.

On balance, because the former opinions have more causes, I prefer to accept this opinion. But on the other hand, the latter opinion cannot also be neglect. Therefore, I hold that while some people can be evaluated by their contemporaries, most individual’s greatness is judged objectively by his offspring.
