Issue 36
Can a person’s greatness evaluated only by people who live after them, as the speaker alleged? As far as I am concerned, I generally agree with the assertion although sometimes it can also be determined by contemporaries.

Firstly, some of great people’s contribution may be too novel to be accepted, which need time for populace at that time to just its rightness. Like Darwin and his theory of evolution, may seems so strange that human beings evolved from monkey, which initially were strongly resisted by most people then. Nevertheless, years of study and observation seemed affirm this theory. Similarly, Copernicus even be persecuted by the authority because of his ideas that the sun is the center of the universe, not the earth. This contradicted  the prevail idea but was then approved right after. It seems that these people are precursor who propose a leading ideas, then people need time to be the justice.

Secondly, the greatness of the person is to some extent complicate and abstruse that people need time to recognize and understand . Van Gogh, as an example, sold only one paintings in his life while his paintings are regarded as the most valuable paintings  the  price of which exceeds one billion. Also, Beethoven’s latest composition was thought a little noisy and strange for the audiences at that time all accustomed to harmony and peaceful music , ironically, that composition is regarded as his most wonderful works now. Einstein’s theory of Relative is a case in point too. It seems ordinary people have to wait a while to evaluate some great works after they can understand it a little.

Yet, some of the greatness of people can immediately revealed by contemporary people because the elites whose contribution can be judged instantly as palpable results. The  grandfather of cross-breed of grain, Yuan Long Ping, solve the eating problem of population especially in large country like China. Also, the benefits  that the computer and internet bring about us are undeniable, may be Bill Gates should be the first person to be praised. Some person’s greatness are indeed evaluated by contemporaries, like the Nobel Prize , which are widely acknowledged  .

In sum  , it seem that the judge of greatness is a problem concerning the time , as those great people are leaders of our times  who always have profound and complex idea which can not be easily comprehend. As for those contributions function immediately, they can be regard by contemporaries. So the greatness of individuals should be determined by people live after them in that many greatness need time to understand,  test and access.
