The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
  “ for many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. In this memo, the president recommends that all of the stores should concentrate primarily on  domestic cheeses and discontinue stocking imported ones. To substantiate this recommendation, the president points the fact that the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were domestic  ones .Meanwhile he also cites the recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine showing that more subscribers prefer to domestic ones. First of all, the recommendation depends on the assumption that domestic cheeses will be sold  well in all of the stores . Yet this assumption is unwarranted. The reason for the fact might be that the domestic ones were experiencing sales promotion and the prices were lower. Or perhaps the people on the area where the newest store was all just prefer the cheeses form Wisconsin. If these are the cases , the speaker can not based on it to draw conclusion about the sales of the domestic cheeses in all stores .Secondly, as for the survey cited by the president , the subscribers  can not constitute a sufficiently large sample of all the citizens and also can represent all kinds of citizens throughout the United States, thus the president can not convincingly resort to the result to justify his recommendation.

Even if there will great demand for the domestic cheeses all over the nation, the president fails  to provide any evidence to substantiate an additional assumption that the demand for imported  cheeses suffers from decrease. Lacking of such evidence it is entirely possible that more people   prefer to purchase the cheeses from the stores and accordingly the number of customers buying  imported cheeses also increase .Or perhaps the people who would like cheeses before slowly have  an appetite for the imported cheeses. In short , without excluding these and other possibilities   , the  president can not convince me of his recommendation that all of the stores should discontinue stocking many of their imported cheeses.

Finally, even though the demand for domestic cheeses is increasing and there is declination in  the demand for import ones, the president also too hastily generalizes that his recommendation  can improve profits and is the best way. Perhaps the domestic cheeses have high material cost and  low prices , so the large sales can not greatly improve profits. And perhaps the stores can rise  profits by other means  such as attracting  more customers through some sorts of campaign , opening more stores in the areas where there is potential markets for the cheeses.
