In the course of human events, we always face the questions that who evaluate a historical figure’s contributions and greatness and do the final judge of his or her lasting value. The statement claims that only those who live after them could decide them. Admittedly, in some certain conditions, individual’s contributions could be decided by their contemporaries. But in most time, these are judged by both the followers and their generations.

The contributions of the people, which are intangible or could not be used immediately, might be ignored by the contemporaries. For instance, in the scientific areas, scientific findings are always abstract, or against the wide-accepted norm and dogma. That makes few people could understand. These theories, hypothesis or inventions faced up to the doubt and suspicion, until they are tested time and time again to be recognized by the followers. Bruno and Galilei，who insisted the theory of Copernicus—sun is the center of the universe instead of earth, were not recognized after the followers found the truth. It is same as some artists, such as Van Gush. His creative paintings made the contemporaries impossible to appreciate. It is offspring who found the value of their contributions recognized them as significant.

What we called classical is the one that not only accepted and appreciated by the contemporaries, but also recognized by the continuous generations. Classical contributions could be tested by time. There were also some historical figures that got more appreciate by those who live after them than by their contemporaries. Take A. Einstein as the case of point. His quantum theory which could be only understood by few people in his contemporaries is widely appreciated and used in nowadays. So is Beethoven. To sum up, neither the contemporaries nor those who live after them could judge the value of an individual alone. The real greatness must be great whether they are recognized by the contemporaries or those who live after them or not.
