When we talk about the function of history, some people hold the viewpoint that history cannot do favor to us to make important decisions today. As far as I am concerned, history plays a significant role to help us to make our decisions even today. We can not only absorb the successful experience from the history but also remember the failure of history to avoid the same things from happening.

To begin with, history is a good book which records the past of human-being including culture, tradition, significative incidents; History is also a good teacher who can teach us countless experiences of our ancestors whatever successful or fail they are. In retrospect to history, there are many successful and fail incidents in which we can learn a great of number of useful experiences. We will never forget the great scientist of US--Thomas Edison, who invents electric light to bring human light. He make thousands of experiments to find a suitable material. With the spirit of persistence and diligence, he eventually succeeded. From this incident of history, what we should study is the spirit of persistence and diligence, thus, people can learn much from the history.


Knowing about the past can help us to make important decisions. After knowing about the history, we acquire good merits and useful experiences which can be absorbed as references to decide significant things. For instance, Korea, a developed country, which absorbs the good experience of Japan and walks a way of capitalism, during just 30 years, it develops to a super economic country from a poor one. Without this sensible decision to walk in this way, it would not attain today’s achievement; Human should also remember of world war two. It is fascist that brought human this sad catastrophe. German, as a main fail country of fascists, feels shame for doing such guilt to human. Nowadays, German government founded a famous magazine called ‘Bring Mirror’ to remind people of what their ancestors have done and analyze the domestic situation with a purpose of avoiding recurrence of this catastrophe, meanwhile, government made decisions to never bring human wars, therefore, history, as a assistant, can help us to make some important decisions today.


Admittedly, history supplies us former experience, because of its long time, some experience may not be applicable to our daily life. The development of society is a dynamic process, there must be great changes taken place from ancient times to modern times. So we should connect the former experiences with our practical life, do detailed analysis and deducing, then we can best put them into practice.  

To sum up, history can not only help us know about the past but also benefit us from making important decisions, furthermore, Learning from history should connect with our practical life instead of using past experience blindly. That is the great function of history.

文章里面一个普遍的毛病是很多本该拆开来的句子被逗号连成了长句。建议去看看忘了是pooh还是谁发的关于strong thesis的帖子。虽然不是主题句，但每一句话都应该有完整但不赘余的逻辑结构。另外，虽然decision-making在文中多次出现，但实际举的例证似乎都没有突出decision-making这一点。有时候同样的例子，你在举例的时候有没有点到关键部位对例子的支持力有很大影响。还有，你能不能在阐释一下你这篇文章的思路，我总觉得逻辑不是太明晰。不好意思，说的都是缺点，为了提高效率嘛

The time we live in is an axis that has a direction, from the past, through the present and towards the future. Every second comes out of the previous second and the present comes out of the accumulated effects of the past, no matter in a deterministic way or not. Therefore, even though the history may not provide us any guaranteed answers, it is still helpful to learn about the past for making important decisions.

It is true that today's world is changing rapidly and we are facing tremendous uncertainty. This uncertainty, therefore, often prevent us from drawing direct solutions out of the knowledge of history. An example comes from the investment decision making in stock market. The stock prices are notoriously difficult to predict despite that countless versions of financial theory and statistical model have been established to make use of the historical data. There was a study shows that the return of a portfolio of stocks selected by a monkey, no more different than random selected, is no worse than a carefully chosen one recommended by a group of preeminent economists. Another vivid paradigm is the weather forecast. "What's the use when I'm told there's 70 percent probability of raining tomorrow? If the reality drops into the other 30 percent, does it prove the forecast wrong?" This is a typical complaint we have heard from people.

However, such a forecast does mean something. A 70 percent probability to rain indicates that taking an umbrella with you is much safer than not doing so. Facing the omnipresent uncertainty, the concept of probability is a tool of human beings to describe and perceive it. No matter one is averse or neutral toward risks, the study of historical data can offer him a prediction with probability, though not so precise, containing considerable information for decision-making.

In fact, the main invalidity of the knowledge about history derives from the incapability to make precise predictions. However, even this conclusion is summarized from the observation of the past. In deed, an important source of history's value is the lessons it teaches us. The history, usually viewed as a mirror by people in China, calmly tells us gain and loss, dos and don'ts. The experience of World War 2 teaches us never to pacificate and compromise with people who have same ambition as Nazi; the tragedy of September 11th shows us that terrorists target at innocent and defenceless civilians thus we should choose to stoutly eliminate such common enemies of humankind. Even in the above-mentioned stock market, people still learn from the past: do not put all eggs into one basket.

Today is so new and complex that we are often bewildered in front of it. Nevertheless, under the ever-changing surface, we are able to find something unchanging over time. Maybe history cannot convoy us to our destination; it illuminates the front territory of us. Thus, we decide which way to go.

When I was in high school, history is one of the courses I hate most. At that time, I considered it a discipline only to memorize some past events. However, my history teacher told me that history can gives one wisdom as well as knowledge, which I completely agree now. History can help us not only to have a clearer picture of current events but also to predict the events have not as yet happened.

Many events happening today have roots on the past. The general case is that the current events are the progress or the result of the past events. It can hardly be said that we have known a thing if we do not have an idea why it happens and when it begins. So the learning of history brings about a complete understanding of today. Convincing arguments of this view can easily be found in our daily lives. When we feel sick and go to hospital, doctors always check our medical records to find out if we have had familiar disease before or if we have had some other illness that will cause our current symptoms. Every doctor knows that checking medical records is equivalent to questioning patients. Neglect of chronic diseases, allergic medicine, and other medicine history may lead to fatal errors.  This example tells us that history often becomes the fundament of our decision.

History gives us knowledge as well as wisdom; history leads to a correct judgment of today as well as an insightful prediction of tomorrow. Every event like every object in the world has some certainty in its progress. Looking into history can let us conclude this kind of certainty which today’s progress also have to follow, and a thoroughly understanding of it can be a leap to the unknown. This certainty is sometimes called experience. Experience is very important in every field including science which is commonly believed to pay high value on imagination and creative thinking. Most scientist starts their investigation from finding out what other scientists have done about the problems that are related. The experiences of others can guide their investigation. Just as Newton, one of the most famous scientists in the human history, said: "If I have seen further……, it’s by standing upon the shoulders of giants ". Frequently, history gives a direction in a way to deny something. The failures in history sometimes values more than the successes. Everyone knows that addiction in drugs will destroy him before he tries it. The experience of failure of others tell us what will exactly happen to us if we do something wrong.

Although history is very important to today's works and the works in the future, we cannot be constricted by it. In some cases one can only refer to history, but not follow it. The situation in past events may have something familiar to that of today. Nevertheless, no coin is exactly common with the other in the world. There must have something new in current events, so we have to view today's problems with today's eyes. The worst case is that the past experiences will withdraw our progress. My personal experience have given me good lessons. When I was in high school, I was an outstanding student. However, when I entered the university, I even can hardly catch up with others in class. Finally, I was aware that it is the habits developed in high school that drag my feet. I prefer to memorizing some formulas which have brought me high scores in high schools, than do experiments and some practical works which is very important in further studies.

In short, appropriate reference to the past not only helps people judge and decide what to do today ,but also lets people see the prospect of their current actions.
