The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.
'Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers.'

Before offering employment to the spouse of each new faculty member the university hires, the evidence given in his argument should be examined from other angles. The department chairperson seems to believe that these offers to spouse will make new professor likely to accept their offers, without examining other factors that may affect.

First, the studies of Bronston College only reveal that professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same "geographic area." No evidence indicates that their spouses are employed in the Bronston College. Thus, it is entirely possible that giving spouses offer to work in the college is not a good choice. Maybe when couples live together all the time, there is less fresh things but more boring stuffs in their lives, which make professors less happy.

Second, the situation in the area that Pierce University is located may be quite different from that of Bronston College. Maybe the climate in the town where Bronston College is located is much better than that of Pierce University, which makes the former be liked by professors. And it is also possible because of the climate reason, ; the spouses of Pierce's professor are not likely to be employed in a university.

Third, not all new professors have spouses. Some of them may have not married, ; some of them may like to live alone. There is no information about how many new professors have spouses. So it is hard to say these offers will work in making new professors more likely to accept their offers.

After pointing out so many obvious flaws in this argument, now we can say that the evidence to support the chairperson's conclusion cannot be relied on.
