The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
By the word "only", the speaker might have gone to extreme on the issue about whether the greatness of individuals can be decided by their contemporaries.  The greatness in itself is objective, whether people can be aware of it or not.  While the recognition of the greatness, which is a process of perception by human beings, is subjective.  Therefore, the judgment of greatness is dependent on people's ability of recognition.

Admittedly, truly profound scientists and creative artist are sometime out of step of the time and the world they live, therefore having a difficulty to make their achievements acceptable to the society.  They may have gone far beyond the bound of knowledge and aesthetic comprehension of their contemporaries.  The value of their achievements cannot be understood until the society has progressed to the same level they were.  In scientific area, Copernicus and Bruno are the perfect examples, whose discoveries were way too forward for their contemporaries to accept.  But now people regard their theories as breakthrough, since our society has gained enough knowledge to acknowledge this fact.  Same situation occurs in the field of arts.  Vincent van Gogh could hardly manage to sell his paintings to subsist, which are evaluated as the most valuable work of art nowadays.  Society just needs time to catch up these great individual's ideas to make a fair estimation.

However, this does mean that the society is always behind those great minds.  Lots of remarkable achievements are properly awarded when the great individuals are alive.  From Mark Twain to Da Vinci, Beethoven to Einstein, they are all highly honored in their lives.  Their works were no more out of the bound of comprehension of their contemporaries.  Even though the theory of relativity was still ahead of the time and hard to understand at first, it became widely accepted several years later and is considered one of the most significant physical discoveries in the twentieth century.  As long as the ability of recognition can keep pace with these great individuals, it is entirely possible for contemporaries to appreciate their achievements and objectively evaluate their greatness.

Besides, great individuals are not necessarily ahead of the time.  Those who can correctly predict the trend of the world and then make themselves the leaders of it are also successful and great.  Their greatness is usually well recognized by their contemporaries.  Take Bill Gates as the example.  He foresaw the prospect of applying computers to common family use and developed the Windows operating system, aiming at easy operation and entertainment.  The impact is immediate and obvious.  Regardless of the negative monopoly, everyone has to admit that he has actually propelled the progress of computer.

To sum up, it is true that in many cases, the greatness of individuals are recognized by those who liver after them.  But the time span is only the surface phenomenon.  In nature, it is not time but the ability of recognition that decides the greatness of individuals.

By the word "only", the speaker might have gone to extreme on the issue about [regardless of 会不会好些]whether the greatness of individuals can be decided by their contemporaries. The greatness in[?我不知道需要删吗] itself is objective, whether people can be aware of it or not. While the recognition of the greatness, [while是从句吧]which is a process of perception by human beings, is subjective. Therefore, the judgment of greatness is dependent on people's ability of recognition.
Admittedly, truly profound scientists and creative artist[artists] are sometime out of step of the time and the world [where]they live, therefore having a difficulty to make their achievements acceptable to the society. Vincent van Gogh could hardly manage to sell his paintings to subsist, which are evaluated as the most valuable work[works] of art nowadays. Society just needs time to catch up these great individual's ideas to make a fair estimation.

However, this does [not?]mean that the society is always behind those great minds. As long as the ability of recognition can keep pace with these great individuals, it is entirely possible for contemporaries to appreciate their achievements and objectively evaluate their greatness.[这两段怎样拉开距离好呢?

In nature, it is not time but the ability of recognition that decides the greatness of individuals.[结尾挺好]

to 山坡羊
