36. "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live
after them, not by their contemporaries."

Can the greatness of individuals be determined only by their descendents as the speaker's claim? In my view the speaker unfairly generalized. Actually, who will decide the greatness of individuals is case by case. Sometimes the merit of individuals was only appraised by their coeval people, while others may be decided by people who lived after them.

To begin with, as far as some certain celebrities’ feats are concerned, they were appraised by their contemporaries because it was the people who lived in the same era that realized the temporal conditions and circumstances. For example, about the evaluation of YueFei, a hero who fought against the invasion of Jin, people lived in their dynasty had already considered him as a nation hero. However, from our perspective nowadays, we may regard YueFei's behavior as only one kind of sincerity for his emperor since we can not know exactly what the ideology of our ancients. To the same, a good example which may illustrate my idea may be the deed of Mother Teresa. In order to honor her contribution to the poor people, she received the Nobel Prize in Peace. Suppose that when the day that no paupers exist, our descendents may not truly appreciate the significance of her greatness to help paupers in respect that they can not imagine the life of the poor. Therefore, with the given productivity and ideology, sometimes, only the contemporaries can evaluate the greatness of individuals comprehensively.

Secondly, with the development of science and technology, some contributions that can not be recognized may be praised by those who live after them. As we know, as the limit cognition of the people in one era, people could not recognize the importance of certain discoveries and inventions, which will necessarily be found by those who lived after them. Take the application of Penicillin for example, it took about 10 years from the discovery of Penicillin to its' first application for therapy. The reason is that all the doctors refused to accept scientific data that had been proved by Alexander Fleming. In fact, history is laded with this kind of things. For example, Copernicus‘s theory of heliocentric which once be condemned as the heresy has become commonsense nowadays. To the same, the relativity theory once had been rejected by the peers of Einstein. Thus, with the development of knowledge and technology, the greatness of individuals will be appreciated by their descendents.

In fact, the contributions of the man who had made were objective which would not disappear, while the evaluation of their work may be subjective and would change by different people. If their greatness accorded with the cognition ability of their contemporaries, it would accept by them. If their contribution had overtook the recognition ability of their contemporaries that would be rejected by them would finally be accolade by the people lived after them.

In sum, we should not rash to give the judgment right to the people who live after them and have to make our conclusion according to the different situations and the contributions that the giants have made.

Can the greatness of individuals be determined only by their descendents as the speaker's claim?(能想一些不是问题的开头吗?个人感觉以问题的开头应该是最后没有办法之下的选择) In my view the speaker unfairly generalized. Actually, who will decide the greatness of individuals is case by case. Sometimes the merit of individuals was only appraised by their coeval people, while others may be decided by people who lived after them.

To begin with, as far as some certain celebrities' feats are concerned, they were appraised by their contemporaries because it was the people who lived in the same era that realized the temporal conditions and circumstances. For example, about the evaluation of YueFei, a hero who fought against the invasion of Jin, people lived in their dynasty had already considered him as a nation(national) hero. However, from our perspective nowadays, we may regard YueFei's behavior as only one kind of sincerity(感觉用loyalty比较好) for his emperor since we can not know exactly what the ideology of our ancients (is). To the same, a good example which may illustrate my idea may be the deed of Mother Teresa. In order to honor her contribution to the poor people(the poor就够了), she received the Nobel Prize in Peace.

As we know, as the limit(limited) cognition of the people in one era, people could not recognize the importance of certain discoveries and inventions, which will necessarily be found by those who lived after them. Take the application of Penicillin for example, it took about 10 years from the discovery of Penicillin to its'(its) first application for therapy. The reason is that all the doctors refused to accept scientific data that had been proved by Alexander Fleming. In fact, history is laded with this kind of things. For example, Copernicus's theory of heliocentric which once be condemned as the heresy has become commonsense(不能这么说吧, 以现在的人来看, 哥白尼的理论是不对的阿. To the same, the relativity theory once had been rejected by the peers of Einstein. Thus, with the development of knowledge and technology, the greatness of individuals will be appreciated by their descendents.

In fact, the contributions of the man who had made were objective which would not disappear(这里不如用so...that...吧, 要不用个and连接就好了, 这个定语从句怪怪的), while the evaluation of their work may be subjective and would change(语法好像有问题) by different people. If their greatness accorded with the cognition ability of their contemporaries, it would accept(be accepted) by them. If their contribution had overtook(overtaken) the recognition ability of their contemporaries that would be rejected by them would finally be accolade by the people lived after them.(这句看得有点晕)

In sum, we should not(be) rash to give the judgment right to the people who live after them and have to make our conclusion according to the different situations and the contributions that the giants have made.

Actually, who will decide the greatness of individuals is case by case. [
Secondly, with the development of science and technology, [觉得这分句不能概括主题句,且无用]some contributions that can not be recognized may be praised by those who live after them. [In fact, history is laded with this kind of things. For example,不要,用and 就好了吧] Copernicus‘s theory of heliocentric which once be condemned as the heresy has become commonsense nowadays. To the same, the relativity theory once had been rejected by the peers of Einstein. Thus, with the development of knowledge and technology, the greatness of individuals will be appreciated by their descendents.
