His paintings are full of intense color and turbulent brush strokes, which were very different with the coeval works, thus cannot be comprehended and accepted by his contemporaries, let alone thought these works as masterpieces. Until 20th century, van Gogh's work became well acknowledged, and became more and more popular, even brought record prices in auction.

In addition, in case that one's work cannot be utilized at his time, his greatness would be neglected. This happens frequently in the field of science. The ultimate goal of scientific research is to apply it to society.
