Issue36: 511 words  45 minutes
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
****************************

Can the greatness of individuals be decided only by those who live after them? In my opinion, the answer to this issue greatly depends on how great individuals are. If they are much greater than their contemporaries, of course it is difficult for them to be understood. Otherwise, if they are not so great that enough contemporaries can understand them, then it is possible that their greatness can be decided by these people. Furthermore, I have to say, sometimes the authority of individuals will also affect whether he can be understood by contemporaries.

In the history, here are many examples that great people were not understood by contemporaries. For example, Confucius, the greatest philosopher of Ancient China, moved from one kingdom to another to advice kings to adopt his political method, but failing at last. After hundreds of years, in "Han" period, the theory of Confucius was adopted by the emperor of China with the help of Dong Zhongshu, another great philosopher of Ancient China, and finally becoming the main theory that affect Chinese society for about two thousand years. The reason that Confucianism had not been adopted is because in that period, there is hardly people who can understand the greatness of Confucius.

Another apt example is Albert Einstein's relativism. When it is published, there are only three people in the world who can understand it. Therefore, Einstein even didn't get the Nobel Prize for the greatest theory of the last century. From this example, we can see clearly that if the greatness of individuals is much more than what can be understood by sufficient contemporaries, it can hardly be decided.

Otherwise, if the greatness of individuals is not so much that enough people in their period can understand it, then it is likely to be decided by contemporaries. I'd like to take Einstein's another example, his theory of photoelectric effort. This theory is also great, although less great than theory of relativity can be understood by many scientists in the period when it is published. Therefore, with the help of this theory, Einstein gets the only one of Nobel Prize in his life.

What is more, if the individuals are already authorities in their period, their theories are more likely to be understood by contemporaries. This is because if one person is authority, he/she is respected and his/her idea is likely to be studied and examined by more people, resulting in receiving more understanding and support from others. In our department of university, efforts of professors are usually noticed by all of us students while efforts of young tutors are often paid less attention to or even ignored. Under this circumstance, if young tutors make a great discovery or established a great theory, it may cost much more time to make us understand and admit.

To sum up, whether the greatness of individuals can be decided by contemporaries mainly depends on whether this "greatness" can be understood by enough people in that period. To help to be understood, authority is an important factor.

慎重选择例子。爱因斯坦的例子据说容易判雷同
