The author of this argument claims that television viewers should demand that television programmers reduce the amount of violence shown during prime time to reduce crime in Alta. To support her assumption, the author cites that when television sets began to appear in the average home since 1950's. In additional, the author point out that according to several national studies even very young children who watch a great number of television shows featuring violet scenes display more violent behavior within their home environment than do children who do not watch violent shows. This argument suffers several critical fallacies.

A threshold assumption upon which recommendation relies is that almost residents in Alta have televisions. However, the author cites that since the 1950's television sets began to appear in the average home, and the author fail to consider the possible difference between Alta and the other part of the nation. Perhaps, the economy of the Alta was poor and therefore few residents could afford to buy a television. Or perhaps, in Alta there was no information about the television and hence residents were not interested in them.

Furthermore, the author fails to establish a causal relationship between watching violent program and increasing crime. It is equally possible that many other factors leaded to increase crime percent such as the poor condition of the Alta, the condition of the society and the war and so on. As we know, in the 1950 the economy all over the world was bad, and the society was instability. Thus it is not curious to find that the crime percent increase. Lacking such evidence, the author could not lend strong support to the author's conclusion.

Besides, the author fails to convince that watching violent program in television would lead to increasing crime percent. Moreover, the author overlooks the possible that those with violent behavior watched violent programs. Without ruling out such alternative explanation, it is equally possible that those with violent behavior like to watch television which includes violent programs, while other people didn't like to watch violent programs. Even if their parent and the television viewers avoid them watching violent programs, they maybe watch violent programs in other ways.

In additional, to further support her assumption, the author cites that in a survey conducted by the Observer over 90 percent of the respondents were parents who indicate that prime-time television-programs that are shown between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.-should show less violence. The author fails to provide enough evidence that all parents who are conducted respondent the survey.
It is possible that many parents didn’t respond the survey and only those concerned violent programs responded the survey. On the other hand, perhaps television viewer in prime time reduce the violent programs would not lead to reduce crime. Perhaps the children in other times could watch more violent programs. Moreover, the comparison of the survey is incomplete, the author provides no evidence that the crime percent of those who didn’t watch violent programs. The result of this survey lacks credibility and therefore could not lend strong support to the author’s conclusion.

In conclusion, in order to persuade me to believing the author's conclusion the author should provide more information about the resident of Alta. And more complete comparison between the children who watched violent programs and those who did not. Lacking such evidence, the author could not strongly support her conclusion.
