13。The following appeared in a memo from the chief executive of a video game company.
"We have recently been offered the opportunity to buy the rights to produce a video game based on the soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power," by Peter Wood. While the cost of the rights is substantial and will place economic constraints on our company in the short-term, there are two reasons that the purchase of these rights will undoubtedly be a wise investment. First, Wood's last three books have been best sellers and the movie based on his first book was highly profitable. Second, the popular characters and story line in "Squirrel Power" will save us time in developing our video game, thereby reducing our costs."

The arguer suggests that the video game company should buy the rights of "Squirrel Power" which can bring great profits to the company. To support his suggestion the arguer give some reasons .At first glance, his suggestion and reasons seem logical , but after careful study, we can see there are some critical flaws in them.

Firstly, Wood's last successful three books cannot ensure his new book ""Squirrel Power" will be popular too. We know that people's reading taste are always changing. Last year, they may be interested in comedy; This year they may turn to adventure; Next year they may fond in other things. May be Wood's last three books were fit for people's reading taste when they were published so they were sold well, but it is possible that his new book will be unfit for people's reading taste and we can see his new book cannot be welcomed by people. There are other alternatives that may lead a bad result to Wood's new book. Perhaps, they will be other authors who write the same topic as Wood's ,and maybe they are famous than Wood or maybe they write more well in that topic than Wood, people will surely choose their books not Wood's.

Secondly, the book, the  movie and the game are quite different things. Maybe one book is popular ,but the movie and the game which are based on the book are not successful .We have see many examples of this fact. Wood wrote three successful books but only the movie based on his first book was highly profitable, what about the other two books? The arguer dose not tell us. Maybe they are unfit to be produced as movies, or maybe they have been produced into movies but are not profitable. Furthermore, we all know that to produce one game based on book is more harder than produce one movie based on the same book. Therefore we are not sure that Wood's new book will be fit to be produced as game and even if it is produced as a game we are still not sure whether it will be successful.

Thirdly, the arguer wrongly to say that the popular characters and story line in 'Squirrel Power' will save them time in developing their video game, thereby reducing their costs. We know that the way the book to tell a thing is quite different from the way the game to tell it .The story line in one book have to be changed a lot when it is told in game. Therefore the story line cannot help a lot for the producer of the game .The popular characters will be an negative factor not positive factor for the production of one game under some circumstances. If one character has been deepen into the people' heart , no matter how hard you try ,the character you made in your own production will be lower than people's expectation and they will not accept your production. Laura is an famous character in one game, but when she was produced into movies, the fans of the game became angry because the character of Laura in the movies is quite different from the one in game. So, the popular characters in  'Squirrel Power' perhaps will be unable to help the company too.
