Does watching television gives people as much knowledge as from reading books in the age of television, as the speaker acclaims? To some extent, watching television has its own advantages, for it is sometimes more efficient than reading books, however, I disagree with this point of view, because television cannot take the place of books in many aspects.
Admittedly, television holds certain advantages over books for recording and reporting events which are occurring or have taken place, for it can reveal every detail to the audiences. This efficient function of television makes the viewers feel as they are just at the scene of the events though in fact they are not or even never have the chance to be there. From the television, people can see how a rocket launched, watch the whole process of a lion's hunting an antelope, or learn the way to cook a delicious Chinese dish. What they do is no more than turning on the television, switching to the right channel and enjoying the programs they love. How, could an individual have these kinds of experience only from reading books? Imagine describing the things above only by texts or at best with some figures added, people who have read these books will feel nothing more than boring.
Though watching television is more convenient and more telling in some cases, it just cannot replace reading books in any case. For one thing, books are more portable than television sets. People can take books along with them and read them whenever and wherever they want to read. What is more, books do not break down, and they do not need electricity, antennae or cables without which a television set cannot work and actually, they are not always available. For another thing, although viewers can choose the channels, the total channels are limited, so are the content of each channel. Furthermore, each program is played at a certain time, if one unfortunately miss the time of the program he wants to see, maybe he will never have the chance to see the program again later. Turning to the books, however, readers can choose the books they like from numerous kinds of books which include all sorts of contents and they can read one book whatever times they want without worrying that whether they will have the opportunity to read the book again.
Moreover, some type of books cannot be substituted by television. A telling example is the type of reference book. If an individual doesn't know the exact meaning of a word, should he look up a dictionary or turn on a television set? Or should a driver who is finding a route to the destination turning to an atlas or watching television? Without the certain types of books, it seems impossible for one to complete the things mentioned above.
In sum, the speaker overlooks some advantages of reading books. Though watching television has some benefits including more efficient, more telling, more precise and so forth, watching television cannot simply take the place of reading books. Obviously, books are necessary in our life, and nothing can replace them completely.
