Issue222 Learning for learning's sake is an outdated concept. Today, education must serve an ulterior purpose and be directed toward clear goals.

We live in a world of prosperous society marked by materialism and consumerism. Everything we do seems to be linked to practical needs, namely, with a clear goal. Students learn science so that one day the achievements of their scientific research would be applied in military field to produce weapons, in industry to turn out consumer goods. They learn English so that one day they will be well equipped for international communication. In this context, some people hold that learning for learning's sake is an outdated concept. While admitting the practical function of learning in some fields, I want to argue for learning for learning's sake on many other occasions.

Firstly, there are many researches which are not directly linked with practice, but have great value to people. Take such liberal sciences as philosophy and sociology as an example, although they do not serve any pratical needs directly, they will cultivate the mind of people so that they would have a proper value to approach the people and the society around. Moreover, some research of basic science may pave way for other braches which will serve pratical needs. Shall we stop doing this because they are irrelevant to obvious practical needs.

Lending further evidence is the notion that it is in accordance with human nature to learn, to inquire into something unknown although they may not have a clear goal in mind. Most of the time, people learn just out of curiosity. It is always impossible to know the consequence of their research before doing it. If everything is certain before doing the research, the value of this research would be questionable.

There is a saying that " we live and learn". In this modern society, the update of knowledge is so fast that people have to learn now and then so that they could keep pace with the time. Besides, learning is a self-improving process that can be pleasant and fun too. When we realize that we have mastered something new, we feel satisfied and proud. This will again become impulse for us to learn more new things. Leaning is a not a goal, but a process in which people can enrich and improve themselves through learning whether they have a clear ulterior need or not.

Practical usefulness should not be the ultimate goal of learning. If it is, who is to decide which will be useful? We can not leave this decision to a handful of irresponsible legislators and so-called experts. In the 1920's Soviet Union, the government changed direction of the research and even the results in the ostensible name of the welfare of the people. Many researches were stopped and scientists disappeared. This actually caused serious setbacks to scientific research. So learning should be given a free hand to develop and exempt itself from the influence of some mundane needs.

In all, learning for learning is definitely not an outdated concept. It is a not a goal, but a process in which people can enrich and improve themselves whether they have a clear ulterior need or not. Remember: the end can not be used to justify the means.
