Why, you may wonder, is the concept of 'individual responsibility' a necessary fiction. As far as I am concerned, individual responsibility is required by society to ensure its development and stability. Admittedly, a great of number of rules are founded to force and limit their actions, but people can make their own decisions to do something to some extent.

To begin with, the concept of 'individual responsibility' is indispensable to improve the development of human society. Each person, as a member of society, has individual responsibility for actions. Raising their children and teaching them living skills is parents' individual responsibility; Saving the patients from the edge of death is doctors' individual responsibility; as a student, learning hard then making achievement in his/her own field is also individual responsibility. In a word, there is omnipresent individual responsibility. With this responsibility, everyone has duty to endeavor to contribute his own power to human, thus, society can persistently advance. Provided that individual has no this minds, we can imagine that people would have no stimulus to behave and human would be in a state of standstill.

Admittedly, the society sets up countless rules to force or limit person to behave their own individual responsibility. But it is beneficial for maintaining the stability of society. When people behave their activities in the world, they are inevitably forced by law, culture, morality and so on. Obeying these roles has become a mode of people’s living in the world, and we should strive to be suitable for this life style. The law prohibits people from committing a crime, the culture and morality confine people’s action not to do immoral things. If you did not comply with your individual responsibility and break those rules, you would be punished. For instance, let us talk about the issue of raising parents. Nowadays, in China it is a hot issue that whether some adults have pulled their weight to raise their parents. There are a lot of newspapers reported that some immoral adults did not take care of their parents and even maltreat with them. In this case, relevant departments must take some measures to force them obey this individual responsibility or the whole society would in great disorder. Hence, to some extent ,forcing people to attain their individual responsibilities to in favor of social stability.   

However, that does not mean people's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own making. The establishment of rules is to better impel people to attain their freedoms and deciding things. For example, America is a democratic country, and you can express your political ideas to public freely and have the fair right with president. You can behave randomly on condition that you would not break the law.


To sum up, the concept of 'individual responsibility' is absolutely indispensable to society. Though sometimes acting of individual responsibility is forced or prohibited by some rules, individual has right to make their own decisions. Only by this means can achieve the development of human and maintain the stability of society.
