Competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society.


As competition is unavoidable in our society, a controversy problem rises: is competition more beneficial or more detrimental to society? When considering both respects, I generally agree with the author’s opinion that competition is ultimately more beneficial than detrimental to society.

To begin with, competition can make individuals improved a lot. During competition, individuals would have to learn more knowledge and skills in order to be more competent. They may also analysis their competitors - their advantages and disadvantages - so that they can find their own shortcomings and learn the merits of others, which must be a great help to improve oneself. Through competition the society offers everyone a chance to show oneself: competition would put those who is eligible on the right places and exclude those who would cause low efficiency, in this way it request everyone to improve them so that they would not be excluded. And the whole society can run more efficiently. So when considering this, I find competition benefits the society.

What's more, competition can also compel people to corporate better and united together. When competing with other companies, the conflicts among people in one company would become less important. Then they may discuss problems with one another and work together to achieve the same goal, that is to win the competition. So the company may be more efficiency and people working there would be more friendly.

Another reason that I find the author’s opinion reasonable is that competition is not only benefit but also necessary. It can get us more aware that the pace of our society is getting more and more quickly. With the development of science our world has been changing every minute. If we cannot get up with the pace, we would be left behind by our competitors. Maybe it's not so important for individuals, but when considering one country, it becomes a serious problem. We don't have difficulty to find examples - just recalling the history of China - in the 1800s China closed its doors and stop to communicate with other countries, and then several years later, it quickly fell behind in science and other respects. The result is that we were invaded and have no power to defend ourselves. Heavy lessons have told us the importance of competition.

On the other hand, ill competitions may cause great harm to the society. A case in point is the market economy. Experts once recommended that government should not interfere with the economy and let it operate freely. They said this is the best way to get optimal benefits for each firms concerned. However, the results turned out not to be a boom in economy but commotion and pollution to water and air. So in this point, we should have sound institution for instructing the activities.

In sum, while realizing the benefits that competition does to the society, we should also be wary of the potential detriment that may come because of improper instructions. On the whole, if we can get sound institutions for instructing these competitions, we can confidently say that competition is more beneficial than detrimental to society.

觉得整个论证过程缺乏事例证明，而且最后市场经济的例子也不太能证明论点。What's more, competition can also compel people to corporate better and united together. 这个论点证明逻辑上也有点问题，当同一个公司内的人抛弃前嫌可以united了，那公司与公司之间呢？整个社会是不是也是united呢？
