It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

While artists create many works for us, critics find them and evaluate them in their special views. And in this sense lasting value are given by both of them rather than one of them.

On the one hand, the precedence of lasting value is that people creating them exists. Since the first person comes to the world, millions of years has passed. And many things brought out, developed and then disappeared, but something of lasting value is always kept year by year value which is created by artists. As we know, some famous music created in ancient eras are still listened by modern people nowadays. A good case in point is that Liangzhu, which tells us a beautiful but miserable love story of two people. It is so well produced that many people feel motivated when listening to it today. While it is true that much of people's value standard has changed since so many years passed, but their idea that every lovers can be together in the end never moved. In this sense, Liangzhu always causes their bad feeling. Then it is no strange that it can keep popular in so many generations.  In fact, it is also such lasting values that make millions of well-known art works never fade in human history.  Therefore, without artists who created them, it is hard to imagine any of such values exist.

On the other hand, critics play an important role in finding such lasting values from works of artists. What artists do is just create things they think are beautiful, but whether they will get to the public even handed down one generation after another generation largely depends critics.  Each year there are so many art works produced, but not each of them is valuable. Critics who ever specially are trained to evaluate such works can give more reasonable judgment for them than the average person. Without such persons, many famous works may be buried with the death of their authors.

What is more, not only can critics find lasting values of art works, but also they can help artist create more lasting values. This is especially true for both of them living in the same times. For an artist, if critics find great values in his works, he may be inspired largely and work harder and harder in the future and create other great works later. Meanwhile, he may get more support from merchants and will have enough money to go on his creation. In addition, as critics know what is more valuable and they may give artists correct ways in art creating.  For them who do not know which kind of work is valuable, they can try to change styles of their works which may produce great works.

Of course, we should not overstate the effect of critics. Since without people who create works, they cannot play their role effectively. Only when facing with many works, they can choose the best they think and let the public know them. Furthermore, since critics are also people with emotion, it is very hard for them to evaluate a work completely objectively. More or less they will judge them with personal feeling with its author, which can only be solved when the evaluation is hold without telling the author of one work.

In conclusion, existing of lasting values depends on the effort of artists and objectivity of critics. Over-emphasize either one is not wise.
