Because the creators of fiction shape and focus reality rather than report on it literally, their creations have a more lasting significance.

In my opinion, both imaginative works and factual accounts afford us huge significance by presenting the picture of human experience. However, we must be cognizant of that standing on the foundation provided by factual accounts, imaginative works provide us a clearer view and a broader eyesight.

To begin with, works of imagination more accurately reflect the experience of human kind. Accuracy, different from sticking to detailed facts, requires exact abstract and concentration of main points and immunity from the disturbance of unimportant facts. Far from being falsely and groundlessly coined, love, hatred, friendship, betrayal, bravery, freedom, and responsibility, the elements of imaginative works, are carefully distilled by artists from our everyday life. Moreover,  buried in the trifle of everyday life, these elements usually fail to be recognized, appreciated or meditated. However, imaginative artists construct romantic environments to give prominence to those essentials. Love may be a topic of bromide in daily chats but can be so indelible in Rick's heart in Casablanca. In common life revenge may seem narrow but can be so tragical in the experience of Hamlet, so piquant in the legend of Monte Christ and so painstaking when placed in contrast with the great natural force in Wuthering Heights. Freedom, a word that we claim too frequently to remember its true meaning, cannot be earthshaking when cried out from the last breath of William Wallace in A Brave Heart. These concrete examples show the effects that factual accounts are unable to attain using same elements.

Freedom is legalized as the most indispensable right in expression, action, opinion, marriage and religion. Imagination, the fundamental expressing channel of imaginative works, is a consistent practice of freedom of thoughts. People are allowed to explore the ocean with Jules Verne in his novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and roam in the universe with Stanley Kubrick in his movie 2001:A Space Odyssey. Moreover, the works of imagination are the fruits of active creativity, which is the most cherishable ability of mankind. Human is superior to other species because it refuses to submit to and be confined in any given condition. Imaginative works provide not only the reflect but also the encouragement and edification of  the expanding power in human beings, to expand the frontier both in knowledge and in living space. The publication of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, for example again, illumined and predicted the invention of submarine. Movies such as E.T. and Contact have led human airships and detectors to search for aliens in outer space. These cannot be resulted from factual accounts.

However, the value of factual accounts should not be ignored. Without them, imaginative works lose the starting point to march out from despite strong imagination. If the Scottish revolution was not recorded, where is William Wallace and his brave heart? If the basic knowledge of the ocean acquired by ancestors were not presented, where is Verne's exploration under the sea? But it is not against common sense that skyscrapers are more meaningful than the groundwork it is built on. While paying adequate attention to factual works, we should not cuff the wings of imagination.
