Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Nowadays too much information keeps us all going for days, and so many scandals revealed or to be revealed, in politics, academia, or other areas, focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Admittedly, scandals help us to manage our government and society through uncovering unknown sins, disclosing staggering corruptions and revealing bad managements in big enterprises. At the same time, scandals also cause problems, such as misleading our kids, causing lack of personal privacy, and especially the waste of public sources paying the exceeding and unnecessary attention on them.

Scandals, which can easily arouse public interest and concern of the masses, are of help to investigate happenings and solve the problems. With the rapidly development of the public media, especially the invention of the Internet, a large scandal that tonight happens the next early morning can be clicked on most news websites, spread all over the world ,and be the key topic of public conversation. So many concerns on a scandal can simulate transparency and accelerate solution, which is of benefit to our society.        In politics, political scandals can have the government or commission develop its monitor functions more healthy. For example, Salt Lake City bribery scandal--the buying of Olympic Games, which impaired the spirit of Olympic Games, can bring broad concerns about the operation of the Games. In academia, the plagiarism scandals can bring criticism and do bad to the fabricator. That is, scandals help to purify the academic circumstance. Once a researcher does the plagiary, his other paper may be not easily published as before. Another typical example in business domain is the Enron corruption scandal which has brought out the rethinking of the accounting and management.

However, each weapon have two edges--to do good or do evil, scandals also bring us problems. First, scandals take up our time, exhaust our resources and may have undesirable influence on kids. Radios broadcast the political corruptions, televisions show the sex scandals, and websites spare no effort to tell us trivialities about the stars. All these may confuse our children misunderstanding their surroundings while have no help for their healthy grow-up. Second, scandals sometimes may wreck our sense of security. For example, sex scandals whether real or not often disturb victims' life and cannot protect personal privacy, even scandals can be fabricated misleading the public for certain purposes.

Whether scandals are useful for us or harm us depends on how the media lead us and manage the scandals just as the saying: faults are not in our stars, in ourselves. Undoubtly, It is good to encourage exposure, without causing public chaos, of such scandals as corruptions and political briberies, and also we should notice the byproducts of the exceeding attention on trivialities while our regards should give to such significant events like the global pollutions, and victims who are badly suffering in the Indian Ocean earthquake and Tsunami.

To sum up, scandals can be helpful to us in purify our society, improve management of government and enhance operation transparency when we make use of them. If not, scandals can cause problems as lack of personal privacy and waste of resources which may be allocated to help building society better.
