ARGUMENT4 拍砖必会

ARGUMENT4: The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.
'Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty and Fitch Realty—Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams.'

In the argument the author recommend that Adams Realty is clearly superior than Fitch Realty by citing some specious comparisons and his/her own experience. However, close scrutiny of the argument would reveal several unproven assumptions, which render it unconvincing.

To begin with, the author assumes that Adams Realty is better than Fitch Realty since the former has more real estate agents than those of the latter, many of whom work only part-time. But the argument fails to provide any information to support the conclusion. It is entire possible that the agents of the Adams Realty is less experienced than Fitch Realty. In addition, the author fails to consider the possibility that it is just because of Adams Realty's inefficiency that lead to their more agents than Fitch Realty. Furthermore, no evidence is given to show the specific information about an agent's everyday workload. Maybe this kind of work is relatively not so onerous and part-time has not any nexus with the company's efficiency.

Furthermore, the author makes a false analogy of averaged home price between the two companies. It is entirely possible that homes listed by Adams Realty are more likely to be those luxury houses with a much higher price while homes listed by Fitch Realty are those ordinary ones with a lower price. Lacking such information concerning the details of homes listed by these two companies, the author's assertion seems groundless.

Another point the author stress is that Adams sell faster based on his/her own experience of selling homes through these two companies. However, this is not necessarily the case at all. As is known, nine years is such a long period that is enough for any significant changes in the field of real estate market. It is highly possible that the need of homes ten years is not as great as these years and four months of selling a home perhaps is a surprisingly short time at that time. Even if sufficient evidence is found to support that the efficiency of Fitch Realty is indeed lower than that of Adams Realty, but this is not to say that the situation remains. It is likely that now Fitch Realty is better than Adams Realty and undoubtedly is a good choice to sell home.

In sum, the argument, while it seems rational at first, has several flaws as discussed above. The argument could be improved by providing the specific information about the comparison of efficiency between these two companies and other convincible evidence.

In the newsletter the author argues that it is wrong to consider a diet high in complex carbohydrates and low in fat [should/is]be optimal for good health and longevity by citing the fact that some mummified remains of the ancient Saurians who are fond of this type of diet show the existence of many medical problems and the high incidence of these diease among those who have tried these types of diets. However, the argument depends on several unsubstantiated assumptions and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands.

To begin with, the author [加个falsely 吧,更好识别取向]assumes that the correlation between high complex carbohydrates as well as low fat diet and such diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease means that the type of diets causes the those diseases. [看到我头都蒙,主干清晰些diet cause diease]But the argument fails to provide sufficient evidence to support the conclusion. In addition, the argument fails to consider the possibility that people who already have suffer from such diseases might prefer such diets in order to prevent deterioration of these diseases.[末句好]

Another point the author stress[es] is that these medical problems also exist in the mummified remains of the ancient Saurians who take the same diet--high in carbohydrates and low in diet. However, no specific information is provided to show the prevalence of these medical problems in the ancient Saurians. Thus it is very likely that those mummified remains happen to have those medical problems. Even if sufficient evidence has been found to prove the authenticity of the prevalence of such diseases among the ancient Saurians, it is still unreasonable to attribute the phenomena to the diets. The arguer may ignore other possible factors that may also cause such prevalence. Maybe the ancient Saurians are born to have a higher possibility than modern people to suffer from these disease or it is entirely possible their distinct lifestyle that[多了] make themselves so. What is more, no definite information is given to establish that the sicken ancient Saurians are the ones who take such diets. Thus it is also highly possible that such diets have nothing to do with those diseases. Lacking such evidence, the author's assertion seems groundless.[我觉得气势还不够]

Even if we concede that there is an evident nexus between the diseases and the diets, it is likely that there is no causal relationship between the two. For instance, the ancient Saurians who take such diets high in carbohydrate and low in fat might be prone to take other certain diets that two different types of diets when mixed serve as catalyst to those medical problems such as heart disease, dental problems, elevated blood pressure, obesity, early mortality and so forth. It might also be the case that such diets the ancient Saurians take are too unsanitary to achieve the nutritional experts' standard.[也可以说说high fat 的好处,like more enery provision, to some degree sturdy body, etc]

In conclusion, the argument, while it seems logical at first, has several flaws as discussed above. This argument could be improved by providing evidence to show the causal relationship between the diets and the diseases. It could be further improved by ruling out alternative explanations for the supposed causal relationship.
