In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books

With the development of the information technology, there are various ways in which we can learn, such as television, computer, radio, and internet. Does it mean that reading book is not as important as it once was? Admittedly, as the speaker claims, in television age people can learn much by watching television. However, compared with reading books, I disagree that reading books is not as important as it once was and watching television can replace the reading for learning. Either of the book and television has its own merits, which are useful for us.

Undoubtedly, television provides the information and knowledge in a more visual and more convincing way. In some fields, the mere knowledge and theory are hard for the people to understand and grasp, whereas they could be provided through television to make the study easier and more interesting. Consider, in geography, only the words that describe different kinds of terrain would fails to provide a profound understanding for the students. However, the television could show the real places with particular distinction in a more visual and more appreciable way. Obviously, in such cases, the television is superior to the books for the information more acceptable.

However, book is the best way to comprehend the profound ideas, and to learn systematically and integrally, attributed to the function of words --written language. Common sense informs me that not all of the knowledge and theories can be showed in a visual and pictorial way. For example, the intricate ideas in physics and math, which are full of logical reasoning, previous experiences and experiments, are hardly to show through television. In literature, the characters’ intrinsic movements described in words could trigger our imagination and cultivate our personality, also many scenes in the fiction or other kinds of literature cannot be recurred in spite of television.

In order to make our study and education more productive and effective, we should combine the use of the book and television. Through the books, we acquire the basic knowledge and fundamental skills; through television, we could gain the latest information about the current scientific fields and the social events, which is helpful to enrich our minds and lore. Neither of them could be overlooked, in television age, both are responsible for our learning and self-enriching.

To sum up, television supplies the visual and more acceptable knowledge to help us get better understanding and encourage our interests. However, the book could make the people learn more systematically and integrally. The best way to learn is to merge the two methods, without neglect of either.
