The bombardment of visual images in contemporary society has the effect of making people less able to focus clearly and extensively on a single issue over a long period of time.

Could the bombardment of visual images, such as advertisements, TV series and movies affect people to less concentrate on those more important issues and affaires for a long period of time in contemporary society? As my point of view, the speaker has merits in some aspects of visual images; however, it seems that in other aspects, the visual images turn out to have positive impacts. Moreover, the determinant of whether people could concentrate on single issue over a long time is not the visual images, but rather people themselves.

To begin with, admittedly, some aspects of visual images, such as advertisements and TV soap operas, do radiate passive even negative influence on people today. Contemporary society has teemed with advertisements in streets, in the campus, in internet even in people's homes. Consequently, people could not avoid the encounter of AD in most of cases .Moreover; these Ad and TV shows often provide the function of entertainment and relaxation as well as attract people's attention from serious issue to leisure activities. For more or less, people would distract attention to these kinds of relaxing and lighting Ad and soap operas. Therefore, paying less emphasis on their original tasks and important issue they need to devote themselves in. Consider children doing their homework today. As our experience, children often frequently cease their home task to go to living room to watch television for a while. Similarly, when we search on the internet for important data and evidence for our essays, we often encounter some attractive AD and simply click the AD for getting the details. In such sense, obviously, we would make our work less efficient by continuously stopping in face for AD we have curiosities in.

However, other aspects of visual images such as movies force us to keep focusing on a single social issue with the compelling and attractive visual impact. These movies’ visual images are so colorful and fierce which make us shocks and unable to paying less attentions. Take the film The Day After Tomorrow as an example. The movie uses the unpredictable visual contact about the disastrous tsunami happened in New York to illustrate its emphasis on the worries of environment problems and the effect of greenhouse gases. As deeply shocked and moved by the visual impact, people have been impressively concerned with the issue the film raises, although it may be not real. In fact, the issue has been more widely discussed since the movie released especially after the recent destructive tsunami happened in Indian Ocean. Further, the movie also raise the collective attention of scientists who are worried about the effect of global warming and make them more devoted to the problem. Thus, from any perspective, movies especially those that have compelling visual images, could largely raise social concentration on the issues it raised.

The visual image is just like a double-edged sword. It could serve human being well and also could do harm to people. Since the visual image contains both the right and wrong, the valuable and trifling, the meritorious and harmful, people are challenged to select useful and worthy visual information from those which just only need a glance. Moreover, those who have the ability to resist the temptation of the colorful visual and place as much as their attention on their original focus would definitely seize the advantageous position in contemporary society. Therefore, though people may encounter the visual images with same times, the different quality and ability would bring them different with extent to the influence of visual images, whether they serve for distracting or concentrating people's focus.
