As we know, different nations have different cultures and thus have different rituals and ceremonies. In other words, rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. But are they the only approach for people to have a sense of who they are as the speaker asserts above? In my point of view, however, I strongly disagree with the speaker since other things also serve as symbols for a distinct culture with which people can also get the sense of belonging to a culture.

Undoubtedly, cultures, in the modern world with the prevalent trend of globalization and integration, have become a most important sign to distinguish a nation from another, thus more and more emphasis have been put on cultures especially those can better represent the cultures such as rituals and ceremonies and so forth since rituals and ceremonies could have a extremely impressible visual and acoustical impact on people. At the very beginning, when sciences have not generated, people are confused by many natural phenomenon such as lightning and sparkling stars and so on. Accordingly, such rituals and ceremonies have emerged for the sake of explaining all these seemingly mysterious objects. To put it more simply, superstition and religion beliefs are the direct causes of rituals and ceremonies which ultimately evolved into symbols of a distinct culture. To support this, one needs to look no further than spring festival of China. This particular festival is originally an special activity to drive away some horrible kind of mythical animal called Nian. As time passes by, this festival has become a unique holiday for Chinese people to celebrate the coming of a new year. Thereby, rituals and ceremonies help define a culture.

Furthermore, with the necessary rituals and ceremonies, societies or groups of people would have a sense of who they are. Through these rituals, people could be immersed in a distinct culture and therefore a pride sense of cultural belongings and identities arises unconsciousnessly. In other words, people would not lose their identity in society and their traditional culture. For instance, there is a unique celebration in China called dragon dance. In the special activity, a dozen of people are dancing with a dragon together with a fire ball, each holding a fraction of the body of the dragon. Through this ceremony can we Chinese people get a pride sense of our ancestors since in the old Chinese mythology the dragon is sacred animal which is total believed to be the ancestor of Chinese people. Thus this ritual benefits people a lot in that it could make people have a clear mind of who they are and make them a intense feeling of cultural belongings.

However, this is not to say that without rituals and ceremonies societies or groups of people would have a diminished sense of who they are. Since culture is much broader scope of conception, ceremonies and rituals only function as a small part of the whole culture. Language, mythology, distinct food, regional music and so on also serve to represent a culture. For example, different countries or nations undoubtedly have different languages and their own mythologies about the originals and all these could undoubtedly make people be aware of who they are.

To sum up, although rituals and ceremonies can represent cultures and more or less make people have a sense of who they are, obviously they are not the only approach to do so since language and mythology and other things could also well serve the purpose.
