Whether the greatness of individuals can be determined by their contemporaries, or by their future generations? The speaker is in favor of the latter. Although in some respects individual achievement can be decided by those of the day, I fundamentally agree with the speaker that it should mostly judged by those who live after them.

One chief reason for my contention is that some paramount accomplishment by advanced experts can not be understood by most people at that time. Significant achievements are often abstruse or have a special perspective, making them incomprehensible. Great persons' thoughts differ from ordinary people, and therefore the mundane often takes great ideas as heresy. Take Einstein for an example. When he advocated his famous theory: the Relativity Theory, it is believed by most people to be incredible. Only a handful of people respect his theory. However, as time goes by, most people now give him a marvelous fame.

Another compelling argument in favor of the speaker's assertion is that the established regulations and beliefs circumscribe the development of new ideas. People who have a religious belief would discredit any thoughts against their dogmatics, and the religion power also limit new discoveries, calling them heresy. History is replete with apt illustrations that bolster my view. Copernicus, Polish astronomer, advocated that the earth and other planets are revolving around the sun against the common earth-centered belief. His book was regarded misleading by people at that time. His supporter Bruno was sentenced to death by the Inquisition due to the new discovery. However, this theory has been proved by scientists in most countries to be the truth nowadays. In short, the conservational strength prohibits the emergence of new opinions because of their straying from the normal orbit.

However, in the field of arts, many masterpieces can be recognized at the nascent time. After all, arts is direct to human, whether paintings or music. People can discern their greatness by their feelings. For instance, the Mona Lisa's Smile by Da Vinci, Leonardo becomes a well-known painting to people of his day. Nevertheless, that is a small part; they can be called exceptions. Just as Louis Pasteur once said(and I paraphrase):"What a scientist should consider is the evaluation of those who lived after him or her, not the contemporaries."

All in all, I concede that many works in the art realm can be appreciated by the contemporaries. However, most inventions or new discoveries are often neglected or even criticized by most people or authorities at the beginning. Only time will give them a correct evaluation.
