Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.
Would education be truly effective only when designed according to individual needs and interests? Fundamentally, I agree with the speaker. Nevertheless, in some circumstance, student-centered education would also result in some chaos.
The traditional education, which ignores students' characteristics and interests, has been proved ineffective and counterproductive. Consider for example of high-school education in China. Students here are required learning the same knowledge, doing the similar activities, even wearing the uniform haircut and clothes. Gradually, students in such circumstance become less creative and duller; due to be forced to do the same things considered merits by the teachers and parents. What a pity. It is probably unbelievable for many western people, but it is the truth. Due to this situation, Chinese students act less creative than western students. Accordingly, traditional inflexible and rigid education would be more likely disadvantageous and un-benefic for students’ development.
Student-centered education could effectively involve students in the learning process. A notable philosopher ever said (as I paragraph):"there are no two totally same person in the world." It indicates that people are different from others even including the twines. Faced these differences, what should we do in education? Obviously, student-centered education specifically designed for each individual is a wise choice. Common senses and experiences inform us that when we perform what we are really interested, we would success more easily than doing what we are distasteful. Consider, for example of Bills Gates. If he were not interested in computer science, would he be so successful today? A notable philosopher once said (as I paragraphs):"Interests are the best teacher for everyone." It tells that interests could help people perform more excellent. With the interests, study and learning would be more attractive and desirable for students. Consequently, education should meet each individual’s interests; in the way, study would become an active process for the students and very likely motivate more potential of the students.
However, over-emphasis on students' desire would bring about some chaos in education. In fact, some desires and needs of students are absurd and unhealthy. If we still insist on meeting such desires and needs, the results would be terrible not only for the individual but also for the whole society. For instance, some students are interested violence and other activities prohibited by the government. In this case, education should prevent these students to perform according to their interests instead of encouraging. Thus, we should distinguish properly the merit and fallacy of students’ needs and guide them to the successful endings.
In sum, it is very likely that all the people could not easily arrive at the same opinion, nonetheless what I have mentioned above could probably help people to understand the controversial problem more clearly.
