In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

There is an acute debate over the outside working of faculty recently. Some people insist that all faculty should spend time working outside in order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, while others may assert that it is a bad idea to do so. Nevertheless, it is such a complex and controversial issue over this question that it is difficult to find a universal answer. On balance, the final decision should be made after case-to-case analysis. However, I personally favor the viewpoint that not all the faculty need to work outside over the opinion that every teacher should take other work outside.
Admittedly, it is helpful and necessary for college and university faculty to keep connections with the outside world to catch up with the change in their field in contemporary society. A teacher who only has dated knowledge can never cultivate his or her students to successful ones. As the lore in science and literature both are developing day and night, one may soon find himself /herself dropped behind others without keep attachment with the outside world. For teachers of some courses, taking part-time jobs in their own fields will help a lot .Economic teachers are able to acquire enough information of the economic climate and reflect it to their students on time by working in a company. Biology teachers can attain new discovery about the life mystery and share it with their students by working for some research institutions. Their works bring new blood to their teaching.
However, we should not overemphasize the benefits of outside working by ignoring the problems it may bring about. First, taking outside jobs will occupy the time and vigor of the faculty, which may have a negative effect on their teaching. To support this view, we need to see no further than our daily life. In some colleges and universities, some teachers gain a bad fame due to their poor preparation of the lectures in class .At the same time, they spend so much time in their own outside jobs that they can hardly take care of their courses well. If it is in this case, we may worsen the quality of instruction contrary to our original willing. Second, the faculty may lose themselves in the face of varieties of temptation and finally abandon the teaching job. Money and power often make people change their trails of life. The number of teachers who leave their post of faculty and become a businessman or switch to other careers every year is not a small one. Though they have right to choose their profession, it is a loss to our education.
Even if we overlook the drawbacks of the outside working, there is no reason to demand all faculty to spend time working outside. For some courses like mathematics, history, and so forth, teachers can maintain the connection with outside by other ways such as reading newspapers related composition, attending academic conference, etc. Therefore, they don’t have to taking outside jobs. It is arbitrary to generalize the requirement to all faculty.
To sum up all the discussion above, it is not proper to require all the teachers to work outside. Only under suitable guidance and restriction can the outside working can improve our education level.
