Professor Ran Cheng (University of California, Riverside) plans to recruit a PhD student in condensed matter theory starting in Fall 2024.
While being affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Cheng conducts research mostly in theoretical condensed matter physics, focusing on fundamental problems in spintronics, magnetism, and transport phenomena in various magnetic materials where band topology plays an essential role.

Candidates must be well-trained in physics, demonstrate passion and commitment in theoretical research, and have adequate English communication skills. Applicants majoring in Physics or Applied Physics are strongly preferred, but other majors will also be considered.

Financial support: The 1st year will be covered by Dean’s Fellowship. The following years will be supported by a combination of Teaching Assistantship and Research Assistantship. In the past few years, PhD students in Dr. Cheng’s group were primarily supported as Research Assistants. Senior students with excellent research performance are also eligible for the prestigious Dissertation-Year Fellowship. In 2023, one student in Dr. Cheng’s group was awarded this fellowship.
