217The following appeared in a brochure promoting the purchase of local franchises for a national chain of gyms.
'Now is the time to invest in a Power-Lift Gym franchise so that you can profit from opening one of our gyms in your town. Consider the current trends: Power-Lift Gyms are already popular among customers in 500 locations, and national surveys indicate increasing concern with weight loss and physical fitness. Furthermore, last year's sales of books and magazines on personal health totaled more than $50 million, and purchases of home exercise equipment almost doubled. Investing now in a Power-Lift Gym franchise will guarantee a quick profit.'

In this brochure the arguer claims that investing now in a Power-Lift Gym franchise will acquire a quick profit. To substantiate this claim, the arguer cites several statistical evidence showing that the popularity of Power-Lift Gyms and increased concern with weight loss and physical fitness. However, close scrutiny of this argument reveals that it lends no credible support to the claim.

To begin with, the popularity of Power-Lift Gyms among customers in 500 locations and national survey indicating increased concern with weight loss and physical fitness does not indicate that Power-Lift Gyms will be welcomed by customers. Perhaps the markets have been saturated, or perhaps the new Power-Lift Gym is not competitive compared with other 500 Power-Lift Gyms. Besides, no evidence is cited to show that national survey can apply for this town; it is possible that this town is aberration. For that matter, the arguer cannot convince that the investment in Power-Lift Gyms will ensure a quick profit.

In addition, over $50 million revenue of healthy books and magazines last year and doubled number of purchases of home exercise equipment lend no credibility to the assumption that new Power-Lift Gyms will be popular in this town. Only $50 million, a statistic in itself prove little. It is entirely possible that the revenue of other years before is more than last year. Furthermore it is also possible that doubled number of purchases of home exercise equipment may indicate that people would like to exercise at home rather than go to Power-Lift Gyms. Without ruling out these alternative possibilities, arguer's claim about investment is unfounded.

Finally, even assuming people in this town were increasingly concerned with weight loss and physical fitness and are likely to exercise in Power-Lift Gyms, the arguer's claim that investing in a Power-Lift Gym franchise will guarantee a quick profit is open to doubt. Perhaps, other Power-Lift Gyms have their own features and stable customers, thus new Power-Lift Gym has little opportunity to attract their own customers. Or perhaps, the popularity concerning Power-Lift Gyms will be abated in future, and people will be interested in other types of exercise. Without offering convincing supply-and-demand issue and cost-benefit analysis, the arguer's claim regarding investment of a Power-Lift Gym franchise is unconvincing.

To sum up, the argument is unpersuasive as it stands. In order to better substantiate arguer's claim, convincing evidence about popularity of Power-Lift Gyms and increased concern of weight loss and physical fitness should be provided by the arguer. To better evaluate the argument arguer should cite evidence to support the guarantee profits of the new Power-Lift Gyms.
