185. "Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
------------------------------
正文提纲
1.关注会伤害大众的丑闻是对的
2.关注涉及隐私的事是不对的
3.我们应该学会区分争取审查和错误干涉
There are many celebrities in our society who favors our admiration and enjoy their reputation. But the shine of glorious could not shade the interference from people who focuses on them, no matter it is related to his/her private life. How can we comment on the common mass's attention on public persons? I think this is a bilateral thing. On one hand, the focus on one's things which tightly related to citizens' interest is reasonable, but there is not any excuses that common mass could use to interfere a public person's private life.
Focus on the scandals what may do harm to citizens is reasonable. When a politician caused a problem in his/her position that may affect his/her decision related to citizens' interest and good, common mass have right to doubt and disagree with his/her decision. Because what a politician should represent common mass's preferences and priorities. As a Chinese King in Tang Dynasty, named Li Shiming, once said: the governor should speak the voice from his people, and people has the right to consult his actions and talks. What he means clearly reflect the attitude now we look upon the scandals of the public figures whose action may leads deterioration to our interest and good.
But the attention put on things related to privacy is unreasonable, as may harm the one's privacy and then affect his/her life together with his/her family. Now, there is a trend that our curiosity drives our to focus on every affair of the public figures. Many people want to know everything of a public figure, no matter he/she is an actor/actress, an business man/woman, or a politician. And when any flaw and uncommon appearance is found, they enlarge it and express it to the world to make explosive news. Though it may bring them no good or benefit, they still work hard to it. But this is a really serious thing that may deeply harm the people involved in it. It may interfere his/her private life, even his/her family's life. We should stick to a principal that whatever we do should not cause problems to one's privacy, because even a public figure has his/her right to keep his/her privacy from the public.
As a citizen, we should differ from rightly scrutiny from wrong interference of people's affairs. I always remember Professor Wang Xiangdong, a famous editor of China Daily, said in his writing: There is a balance we should chase, by which we should confine our curiosity in a definite area. And a common person no matter what his/her job is should obey a rule of not harm another person, when he/she is opening a secret of a public figure. What Prof. Wang talked represent the principal that one should commit, to some extent. Every one has his/her desire to fulfill his/her curiosity, but at the same time, he/she should learn to never do harm to others.
In a word, I partially agree the issue in the topic. I strongly insist that no one has a unconfined authority to check other people's privacy. As to public express, I think, government should set up legislation to give a definite interpretation of what they could do and what do cannot do. And as to a common citizen, we should confine our curiosity not to interfere other's affairs related to privacy. |
