------题目------
Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.
------正文------
In the epoch of fast development leading to various new concepts and life styles, many people began to ask about the status of tradition is the process of discovery and progress. As imply that the tradition and modernization are incompatible, the speaker likely means that the modernization is totally indifferent with tradition, which, in my opinion, it is not the case. The learning and persevering Tradition is as important as science and technical progress, the speaker overlooks on that.
Most people would assert that in our age with many highly advanced technologies, the traditional views and customs could no longer fit in our lives. For example, traditional laws and judgments cannot apply on a crime that is happened on the Internet, such as the "hackers" get in the server of an bank to draw a bill on their own accounts or an virus like "love" spreads through the whole world to make the computers unworkable. These criminals cannot judge by the traditional laws because they are indirect and what happened are just the streams of ones and zeros. On the other hand, many traditional ethics and customs are no longer work again. For example, there are some places in the world even revised its law on homosexual marriage which was incredible in the past centuries. We must accept that there are many traditional "right" are not as "right" as before.
Conceding that the traditional experiences and judgments are no longer work on many affairs does not mean that we can throw them away and just walk on our bare feet. The experiences and knowledge of our ancestors are still precious and indispensable. Just as the saying of Newton, "If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants", without the help of the predecessors, we would rebuild all the wheels again and climb up the hill of discovery from the root. Throw away the records and books, which are symbols of tradition, our world will fall into chaos. Our inventions and discoveries are based on the previous judgment. If there was no such a law of fall by Aristotle, Galileo cannot doubt it, make many experiments, and generate his famous law of free fall at last. The ancestors' steps are always like ladders to catch a higher goal. This would also work in the realm of politic. With thousands years' development, our society evolved to what it is now, a much more advanced and reasonable form. Without the trails and errors of the past generations, there would be no democracy and peace exists.
When coming to the ethics and rights of ourselves, tradition is so important that is considered as the most essential element of one's mentality. From the tradition, we know the basic quality of human being is to be honest and brave; we know the most precious thing, which is also indispensable, is love and humanity; we know the value of beauty; we know our parents are worth our respect and honor; we know we should not ruin the world and environment with our coming generations will rely on. With the traditional ethics and rules, we human can survive and evolve to a better existence.
In sum, even our world are so advanced that many roles and judgments are no longer applicable on the current affairs, we cannot deny the preciousness of the traditions and customs' effects on ourselves and their impacts on our development and progression. |
