Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.

I partly agree with the author's claim that mistakes can often make an effective impulse on the process of people's discovery or progress with the world and society. However, I cannot comply with the aspect that it is the only way for us to perfect ourselves as it stands in the text.

Admittedly, for most important events that have ever made great influence on the development of the world and society, it is an inescapable step for them to undergo with the mistake at the first time, no matter in the realm of industry or when it comes to the aspect of science. There is no need for us to look further than the 20th century, taking one of the greatest inventors of the America, Edison, for example, who invented the electric lights after failing more than 1000 times which may be considered as unworthy with some people, however, at least, now we can assure from all these fails that these materials cannot be used for the electric light, and it is also just these mistakes, eventually, that make Edison use the proper material to invent one of the greatest facilities in the 20th century. So as referred above, the mistakes cannot be avoided especially when there is no useful information or record of which for us to make use, in that case, mistakes emerging in the research can be one of the useful documents even though its effective function cannot be so equivalent as the valuable experience in the history.

Furthermore, with the nature of people's curiosity, mistakes make another advantage for the development of the objects in studying, for its appearance in the research, it is almost for each of the responsible researchers to devote to study where the mistakes come from, or perhaps, they will try their best to justify the theory. No matter how they will deal with these mistakes, the objects or the theory are completed unconsciously with the debating and discussion about them among people. In addition, even some of the new discoveries come from the mistakes just like the discovery of Uranus and Pluto, which are found after scientists make a carefully inspection of the data about the orbit of Neptune after someone pointed out the flaw that cannot be explained with existing theory. In short, it is just the stimulation of mistakes, which impetus people to make a rapid progress in the development of the area with which they have been studied or not.

On the other hand, mistakes cannot be the only way for us to receive progress or have new discovery, even sometimes, the disadvantageous influence brought by the mistakes can make our society an inhibition in development, because the appearance of the mistakes is always the representative of a challenge to the conservative theory hold by people which would creates the panic. So in my opinion, people’s attitude about how to deal with the mistakes is more important than the mistake itself which can make better function with the evolution of the society. Taking the sun-centered theory for example, at that period, several natural and human phenomena had implied there was truly something flaw with the Earth-centered theory, unfortunately, with some religious reasons, most of people could not accept this new view and even some of them denigrated it. For that matter, the fatuous theory had been kept for a long time that made a great negative influence on many subjects especially for the development of the astronomy.

To sum up, mistakes are effective but not the only way for us to make progress and new discovery with our society; we also need to emphasis on the attitude and method with which we deal the problem. It can only for us to make a wonderful balance between these two aspects that can make our world a bright future.
