138. "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."

Ever since the first "modern man" came to be, human beings never slow down their paces in seeking progress. No matter how many times we fell down, we kept going ahead and thus brought new eras one after another, such as the Renaissance, the industrial civilization, and the modern information society. In this way, the notion that "only through mistakes can there be discovery and progress" seems to be a certain conclusion; after all, to err is human. However, if we take it as a universally applicable truth, it would be not only false, but even dangerous as well.

First of all, is it impossible for human beings to make discovery or progress without any mistake? Thousand-year history has told us a million times that the answer is no. In fact, it would be quite interesting if we look into how discoveries were made in the past, for many of them were found out by all kinds of chance rather than mistakes. For example, Newton discovered the law of gravitation when inspired by a falling apple and Archimedes by the water that overflow, Darwin by the special species on a remote island. None of these necessarily and directly related to mistakes. It is true that any scientific discovery calls for a certain solid professional foundation, however, to well-prepared brains, some small details always tend to arouse inspirations rather than mistakes.

Furthermore, there are usually times when we make progress from our ancestors by complementing their ideas rather than finding out mistakes. In this sense, hardly can we regard the former theory has been denied, but rather a new way of observing things was developed while the old one still has its own value. In retrospect, the discussion about the function of literature will be a telling example. Wilder regarded literature should reflect art, while Hugo believed it should describe society, and Floyd proved it is the way writers express their subconsciousness. None of these should we simply judge right or wrong, because in certain sense, each one has its own reason. But put them together, we will gain an increasingly comprehensive and profound understanding of Literature.

Also,to many fields of study, often new technology or theory accomplishment can bring certain discovery or progress. Because they can provide more effective tools or brand new method for people to research, for instance, without computer widely used, there would not have been such great progress in many fields such as medicine, astrology, or geology. Its powerful ability to calculate and reprocess has lead to significant breakthroughs which can not be easily obtained by only human itself. In this case, mistake is not necessarily involved.

Admittedly, mistakes sometimes can lead to discovery or progress only if people have the ability to learn and then devote efforts to explore the right way, otherwise mistakes will only be mistakes. It is true that when we fail, we can learn what does not work, nevertheless, what does work is the real key to make progress. Suppose that we have walked into a wrong way, neither stay at the same place nor step into a thousand other wrong ways will enable us to succeed. Thus, whether through mistake can there be discovery or progress depends on how you will do and what you can do with them.

Plus, following the assumption that given above, we may get a psychological displacement that we should make mistakes deliberately, the more, the better. In this way, it would be dangerous if people dare to make any kind of mistake before a careful consideration because making mistake is actually a kind of waste of time or energy. All in all, the purpose why we learn from mistakes is not to pursue but rather to avoid mistakes. Put it in another way, if we can learn what is right from others, why do we bother ourselves to make the same stupid mistake again?

To sum up, with positive attitude, mistake is one way but definitely not the only way to make discovery or progress. After all, mistake can never ever take the place of the ability to learn along with the hard work without which we will be tumbled from time to time, but stay blind and fail to walk out our way to success.

在开头给出的话,可以说new technology or theory rather than mistake...

Ever since the first "modern man" came to be, human beings never slow down their paces in seeking progress.(第一,句法不通顺come to being第二,有点意思不流畅,现代社会的进步更快不对吗) No matter how many times we fell down, we kept going ahead and thus brought new eras one after another, such as the Renaissance, the industrial civilization, and the modern information society. In this way, the notion that "only through mistakes can there be discovery and progress" seems to be a certain conclusion; after all, to err is human.(主语呢?) However, if we take it as a universally applicable truth, it would be not only false, but even dangerous as well.

None of these necessarily and directly related to mistakes. It is true that any scientific discovery calls for a certain solid professional foundation, however, to well-prepared brains, some small details always tend to arouse inspirations rather than mistakes.(感觉这一段文字风格自成一体,观点也比较新鲜,用来题库里的另外一个说法,例子虽然很多人用过但是恰当,最为B1是不错的。)

None of these should we simply judge right or wrong, because in certain sense, each one has its own reason. But put them together, we will gain an increasingly comprehensive and profound understanding of Literature.(此论点有点剑走偏峰,不过着重于Make progress上面也还可以。)

In this case, mistake is not necessarily involved.(简直就是同类题型大检阅,所有的题目论点都出来了%)

After all, mistake can never ever take the place of the ability to learn along with the hard work without which we will be tumbled from time to time, but stay blind and fail to walk out our way to success.(总是认为文字扎实了,论证感觉里没用到点子上来,to put it another way: not insightful enough)
